We received a fair amount of feedback regarding the discussion of Arrandale in MacBook Pros. As such, the decision was made to allow for further discussion. We may however wasteland the threads as they get large which may decrease your post count.

Feel free to post legitimate speculation. If you feel somebody is intentionally trolling or posting misleading information, please report the post. I'll also report the header from the previous thread.

Also please don't start posting "yay it's open" or "boo I hate this thread". We know people like it and people don't. Enjoy.

    -------------------

Please keep the following in mind:

Clearly people are itching for a new MacBook Pro. However in the past few weeks there have been numerous threads and posts posting deliberately false and misleading information.

    http://guides.macrumors.com/Help:Forum_Rules#Things_Not_to_Do

Please take a look at numbers 4 and 5:

Going forward, please report any such posts and they will be dealt with accordingly.

Unless you have a relevant link from a reputable site, do not make threads stating that tomorrow is Tuesday (we all have access to a calendar) or that the Apple store is up (it generally is).

    My question is:

If it is going to be several weeks, does anything think a referb is the way togo and then upgrade in October?

I just gave my wife my Silver Macbook 2008 ($1499) edition with the condition I could sell her old Macbook and get a new Macbook Pro. The damper of no new MBP is a problem since I've already backed up my Macbook and loaded it with her files etc.

Good to be back. If Bumble Bee or Anonspecialist are back, any word on those 3AM apple store employees?

Horray, good to be back. So let's get an official count of people reporting apple store employees having to work late.

I'll start the speculation. The macbook pro family image has been removed from all apple index pages.

Everyone should call their local apple stores after they close just to see if anyone is there to pick up the phone.

Where are you seeing this? I can easily see the picture on the macbook pro page and the apple.com/mac page

    Hi guys,

I went by the Apple Store in Regent Street, London (UK) at about 30mins before midnight. The lights were still turned on and the door at the back of the store was open (it leads to the place were they keep their stock and I believe the staff area as well). One guy was taking care of an iMac at the iMac table (I am guessing it was just for maintenance) and there were about 6 or 7 people around the iPhone table. They had cables running down the table and about 4 or 5 Macbook Pro's on the table. I am guessing they used the MBPs to do maintenance on the iPhones. None of the employees were standing around / working on the Macbooks or Macbook Pro's. I left at 23:45, so I can't tell what happened afterwards, but to me, all of this just looked like regular maintenance of their current models on display. Let's hope that they did indeed stay longer and are up to something more interesting right now and will surprise us tomorrow (or at least very soon) ;)

    see you,
    chris.

    Thanks Panda, we need this.

Anyway, I wonder, what would be so horrible about simply letting customers know when the update will occur? That way people don't feel tricked if they bought their MBP in the month prior to release. The could still be secretive up to that announcement, it's just a heads up would be great.

Before we get off-track, let's all just take it for granted that eventually there will be new MBPs, and they will almost certainly eventually have Arrandale.

I'm hoping to restart the discussion on Arrandale itself. There are 4-5 main Arrandale chips that can be used, right?

    i3-330M
    i5-430M
    i5-520M
    i5-540M
    i7-620M
discounting for the moment any possibility that Apple might use a quad-core in the 17" MBPs.

If we are given BTO options or are thinking about going up a size for a better chip, what sorts of differences will we see between individual chips? Where is a good place to go for benchmarks? The PassMark benchmarks are inconclusive at best, because the i3-330M is shown with a better score than the i5-540M, and the i5-430M is shown with a better score than the i7-620M.

The i3-330M doesn't have the Turbo Boost. The L3 cache of the i7 chip is 1MB higher. All of them have the same wattage and the same integrated GPU. The clock speeds are different, but I don't know if this is an actual technological difference or just Intel kneecapping some of the chips.

Would it ever be worthwhile to upgrade to a 520M over a 430M, or a 540M over a 520M? Or is this mostly marketing?

That is meaningless. That page only has the latest products that they're currently promoting, such as the iPad. The absence of the MBP family from that page means nothing.

I was just posting any relevant* updates. There is not definitive evidence of anything right now.

You're grasping at straws. MBPs have not been on that page for a long time. It's completely unrelated to an update.

Cheers mate! Don't the updates propagate over there the following day though? Isn't noon in California like 9 PM in London?

Look at my edit i missed an important word, sorry.

I'm pretty sure the "new iphone ads" and "apple supplier responsibility" images are relatively new. One of them replaced the mbp photo.

Keep in mind that if updates are released soon, the current MBPs will lose resale value instantaneously.

It depends on how much you want to lose and then you will be left waiting again in October.

Having said that, the update in October (or near then) will bring better machines than the update in Feb/March.
