Apple CEO Tim Cook today joined the board of directors for the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights after being a longtime supporter of the organization. Cook counts Robert F. Kennedy as one of his personal heroes and has said there are two photos of Kennedy in his office that he looks at each day.
"Growing up, I was inspired by Robert Kennedy's infinite hope for humanity and his belief that people at their core are good, sharing universal goals for themselves and the world in which we live," said Cook. "Robert Kennedy spoke to our highest aspirations, calling Americans from all walks of life to fight for something better. He was and is a hero and role model to me, and I am honored to serve alongside Kerry and the rest of the board to advance his message of justice and equality."
The Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights aims to reach Robert F. Kennedy's goal for a just and peaceful world by advancing corporate responsibility, teaching social justice, and partnering with human rights leaders. On Cook's appointment to the board of directors, CEO Kerry Kennedy said Tim Cook is dedicated to the cause.
Announcing the appointment, Kerry Kennedy, President and CEO of Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, said, "Tim knows the importance of advocating for and representing people who have not been heard. He has integrity and does not shy away from challenging issues when he knows they are right and just. Tim is deeply committed to the social justice work that he is helping Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights accomplish."
On multiple occasions in the past, Tim Cook has auctioned off charity lunches with proceeds that benefit the RFK Center and Robert F. Kennedy has been mentioned in several of his speeches. Last year, the RFK Center gave Tim Cook the Ripple of Hope Award, designed to celebrate business leaders who have demonstrated a commitment to social change.

Hopefully Tim will help in pushing sensible restrictions on the First Amendment to prevent hate speech.

Well earned following all he has personally done and for shifting Apple to be more socially responsible. When the politicians in DC are unwilling to advocate our, their constituents', need for privacy and cybersecurity, I am glad there are people like Tim in the private sector to have our back

Well, knowing how deeply committed he is with human rights, I'm not surprised at all that he's been appointed in the Board of Directors for a human rights advocacy group. It was all just a matter of "when" and "what" more than "if".

Well, in any case, congrats, Tim! You certainly deserve it.

Doesn't he serve on the Nike board as well? That's pretty random.

I'm not too sure if it's random. I think that represents fitness for Tim (since Apple has a pretty close relationship with Nike, especially since there's that built-in Nike app that can be toggled on and off on iOS (don't know if that's still there, but as of iOS 7, it is)).

This is great, but also very concerning.

Usually, when people start taking this much interest in their personal goals/interests, I feel they've already partly checked out, and the last thing Apple needs is a leader who is delegating everything and taking his eye off the ball.

The competition is younger, more focused and in some ways, more daring. Tim should be doubling down on Apple's future or grooming someone to take his place so that he can pursue his philanthropical interests outside of Apple.

To be fair to Tim, any succession planning would not be very public. So, who knows, maybe he has someone lined up or is working on lining someone up for succession.

My bet's on 20 minutes before this gets moved to PRSI.
I'm surprised it didnt start there. Before it does I want to say. I think it's awesome that the man at the helm of not only a company I hold in high regard, but one that is so powerful is such a man as to work for the betterment of society.

I seriously hope you're being sarcastic. Hate speech codes have already gone way too far, and the fools that pushed for them in the first place are demanding more extreme controls over expression (see college campuses around the country).

Why are private corporations so damn political these days? I miss when they were just focused on making money. So tiresome.

RFK, yeah I can see them in agreement. Now JFK, maybe not.
Of course this has nothing to do with tech unless it's about employment at Apple, otherwise MR is digressing.

How exactly has Tim Cook "demonstrated a commitment to social change"? I wish he would just **** off and leave Apple.

Oh, yes. Hate speech codes have gone way too far, by there not being any at all in the United States. Clearly the nonexistence of hate speech criminalization is not enough: we must mandate at least a minimum amount of hate speech every day.

Oh, wait, perhaps you are talking about the fact that people are allowed to respond to you negatively when you say something they don't like? Fascists!

Or maybe you mean 'hate CRIME' laws? Which are totally different from hate speech, because hate crimes are, you know, CRIMES under other statutes, like murder, arson, assault, stuff like that. There can't be a hate crime without some other crime for it to be attached to. Hate crimes are just crimes that are committed in order to intimidate a group into doing something or not doing something. You know, just like terrorism, except mostly committed by white people against brown people... that's why there's a different name for it, and the laws against it mostly aren't enforced.

I also think Uncle Tim's appointment is well deserved. I for believe corporations should be more morally focused in bettering the planet and not just making money.
