can I do interval shooting by hooking it up to a laptop or just on the camera itself.
if yes, how and what software do I need?

Nikon Capture 4.0 will let you do time lapse photography. You can set the interval and (IIRC) the number of pictures to take. It works quite well. Just remember to set the camera to PPTP rather than USB mass storage.

You will also need software to assemble all the frames into a movie. The D50 shoots what the motion picture people call "3K frames". These are better then what is considered "cinema quality" You might want to look at "Cinepaint" if you need to handle lists of frames as movies and save in various formats.
