Does anyone use Time Machine with an USB stick?
    Does this work on 10.8?

It'd work just fine. The system sees all removable drives as the same regardless of kind. It might just take a little longer as some flash drives are not as fast as a hard drive.

Thanks. How much longer? Two times, ten times...?

I'd tried it out with an 128 USB 3.0 (Kingston) and for an 64 GB backup it took two weeks, while just copying the same data amount took just some minutes. I thought this might be normal because of the indexing and and bad random access of USB sticks.

No. I gave it one day and than quit. But the progress bar seemed to be right.
