This thread reminds me of something I've been trying to find recently. Is there any way to see what some of the regular poster's first posts were? Looking them up through the profiles only gives about the last 500 posts or so. I'd be really interested in finding some of Macrumors's original threads. In particular, the top five or so posters. :)

Thanks a lot Doctor Q, awesome writeup and a lot of great stats. It was a really interesting read being that I am pretty new here still. I recognize most all the names on the Top 50 list, the great thing is all those members are great people who contribute a lot, not spam like on other forums.

Thanks for the effort into the extrapolation, and the willingness to provide us with these types of statistics Doctor Q.

I have a feeling that would be incredibly interesting. I know reading back on some of my old ones, as well as some other members, really sheds some light and in a lot of cases some humor in comparison to the current-day postings. Perhaps Q can help us yet again? ;)
Even a first-five threads or something would be awesome, just to see what the first words typed on MR were.

Clearly, I've been one of the busier members here, at least as far as posting goes. Twice, I've posted 50 times in one day - that's my highest ever daily post count. I did post over 60 times once, but only about 40 of those posts were here; the rest were on other forums I visit.

How do ya'll do it? I sit and read a buncha threads, but I feel like I have nothing productive to contribute; yet you all have crazy high # of posts and they're all so helpful! DAH! Darn you selflessly advice-giving people! :p

Guess I picked the wrong week to be off the forums... :p

Interesting stats, Doctor Q. Thanks for pulling these together - it's nice to see where the membership falls from time to time. It also confirms that I am apparently not the only one with an addiction. :D

You could be like me and post stuff that may or may not be helpful to everyone, but hopefully is helpful to someone. ;)

If it's not helpful, it will either get ignored, or someone will let me know, I'm sure. :p

Just be glad you're not like me, playing World of Warcraft all day, every day. I am such an addict.

I'm not sure how I'm retaining my position, I don't post here all that much anymore , probably 1 post avg per day as of late. I play WoW too much for that :).

I miss MR though, I should start posting more. I probably will when I move up to NYC next fall for college and start to ween myself from WoW. ;)

As always, thanks for the wonderful charts Dr. Q, very interesting.

You would be amazed what a ton of free time, a good internet connection, and Google can do for you  Taking away the good internet connection, all I have had at work here is time and Google, so I try to find what I can and help, but otherwise I usually give real-world experience or general advice, rarely technical processor stuff, because I just don't know that nearly as well as others here, I would prefer to let them answer.

With the NCAA Bball threads, I'm surprised emw wasn't number 1.
Do these numbers count political posts Q? I know they don't count in our profiles, just curious if you used them.
You folks are an impressive bunch of posters, I work a couple of days a week as a pilot and can visit here a lot, I can't imagine doing more and having a full time office type job.
I am sure the advertisers are fairly happy though. Keep it up.

For my case, it doesn't even matter, since only 1 of my posts was in the political forums. I also completely missed the NCAA Bball threads. Yet, I still managed a TON of posts.

I used the count you see in your profile, so political posts (at least those in the Political forum) don't count.

I started collecting these stats before I was a moderator and I use no special access or insider data. I just survey profiles and grab anything that looks attractive, which for me means "numeric". :)

Each time, I gather the data on the 3rd of the month (January or July) and try to post the first chart on the 4th, to keep the intervals fairly even and because I'm likely to be off work for the New Years or Independence Day holiday. As it turns out, that's not really an even interval. From January 4 to July 4 is 182 days in a leap year, 181 days otherwise, while from July 4 to the following January 4 is always 184 days. But it's close enough for our purposes.

Comments on the 6-Month Projections

I made the chart in the previous post by extrapolating member post counts 6 months into the future, based on current post counts and post rates over the last 6 months. Posts counts reflect post counts as shown by the forum software, which excludes posts from certain forums.

The results are only estimates because members change their rate of posting, current members will join the list or drop out, and new members will appear.

The estimates are likely to be high for members who have a recent flurry of posts and will "settle down" in the next months, and could be low for members who have traditionally posted often but have not posted much lately. I don't expect AlphaTech to pick up posting again, which, oddly enough, makes his projection most likely to be accurate. I don't know if Durandal7 or eyelikeart will return to regular posting. Meanwhile, it's not clear whether high-posting members who joined in 2004, such as mkrishnan and PlaceofDis, will keep up their paces.

--- Changed members ---

Eight members projected to join the Top 50 list:
emw, iGary, mad jew, Mitthrawnuruodo, Applespider, Bear, daveL, maya

Eight members projected to fall off the Top 50 list:
Mudbug (by 269 posts), Kwyjibo (by 271 posts), Counterfit, job, teabgs, Durandal7, mac15, mischief

Members projected to just miss joining the Top 50 list:
munkle -- by 2 posts
robbieduncan -- by 28 posts

--- Changes in rank ---

At the top: Mr. Anderson and wdlove and eyelikeart retain their current #1, #2, and #3 spots. The projection shows that edesignuk will move into the #4 spot, passing Rower_CPU, who will drop to #5.

The surprise is that edesignuk will be poised to overtake eyelikeart for the #3 slot within hours of the target. The projection above is for January 4, 2006, and the numbers show that edesignuk will become #3 on January 5th. It's a pretty odd coincidence that this projection hit the target right at this occasion, given that edesignuk has been edging up on eyelikeart's position for 3 years and 8 months!

Highest projected rise in rank, each up 22 slots:
PlaceofDis, Blue Velvet
Note: Blue Velvet has not been participating recently, but expects to be back.

Next highest:
mkrishnan (up 16 slots), Mechcozmo (up 12 slots), yellow (up 11 slots)

Highest projected loss in rank, down 16 slots:
Powerbook G5
Note: Some of you may recall that PowerBook G5 once had the 9th highest posting rate among all members.

Next highest:
AlphaTech, Backtothemac, cb911, each down 14 slots
followed by krossfyter and jxyama, each down 13 slots

arn and iJon are projected to remain rankmates, one slot apart, dropping from #13 and #14 to #21 and #22.

Five members are projected to retain their position in the Top 50 list:
Mr. Anderson (#1), wdlove (#2), eyelikeart (#3), Doctor Q (#6), Nermal (#18). Interestingly, four of these five members are moderators. Moderator bousozoku almost retained position #11, projected to drop to #12 by a margin of 36 posts.

Also dropping one place:
jefhatfield, from #7 to #8, by over 1400 posts
virividox, from #31 to #32, by a little over 100 posts

--- Excluded members ---

For the record, King Cobra would have been #27.

--- Off the charts ---

Newcomer rapidly ascending:
maya, who joined last October, is barely in the Top 100 now but is projected to be in the Top 50 within six months.

Rapid descents:
übergeek and britboy, who are currently just off the Top 50, will have dropped off the Top 100 at their current paces. Both are still around but have been busy elsewhere. We hope to see them around sometime!

6-Month Projected Top 50 Posters

<snip>

Once again, thanks for the information Doctor Q! It will be very interesting to see how these projected estimates align with the actuals come January. A lot can change in 6 months...

I'll also be curious to see if members like mkrishnan, Blue Velvet and PlaceofDis can keep up their insane post counts, or if they'll settle in at more "reasonable" levels. ;)

Thanks again - I love stats!
