Versiontracker.com's "Top Downloads" for Mac OS X and Windows is interesting:

    Top Downloads: Windows
    Spyware Nuker 3.04…
    Error Nuker 1.02…
    Party Poker 1.2
    Windows Movie Mak… 2.1.…
    Microsoft Publish… 11.0…
    ( from http://www.versiontracker.com/windows/ )

    Top Downloads: Mac OS X
    MacTheRipper 2.6.6
    Poisoned 0.519
    VersionTracker Wi… 1.0
    RealPlayer 10.0…
    VLC media player 0.8.2
    ( from http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx/ )

So, Windows users download software to remove spyware, fix registry errors, and play Poker... while Mac users download software to rip DVD's, use P2P file sharing, and watch video content (which was probably ripped from a DVD or downloaded via P2P ;) ).

Basically nobody uses computers to get anything useful done!

... and now I'd like to thank you for taking the time to read this highly scientific study. ;) :D

Interesting programs hitting the top, however the fields of use are not surprising to me at all. I am surprised higher-level versions of Solitaire are not higher on the list of Windows users

Very few people use their computer for "what it was supposed to do" at all times....

A lot of the "useful" apps á la Word, Photoshop etc don't fall into the shareware category ;) :)
