Theoretically since so many Iranians are against their government, couldn't we somehow do back to them what they're doing to us in Iraq by funding an insurgency within their own country? Why go about it the hard way?

hey yeah. maybe we can even form some kind of agency to train operatives in covert operations. they can set up an intelligence apparatus so we can stay informed of what other countries are doing. do you think we could form such an agency??!?!

Hmm...well, I was under the impression that we tried that a couple of times in Iraq in the early 90's and late 90's (not to mention a couple of other places throughout the 20th century)...didn't work then, why would it work now?

    Re:
It's not like the Iranians are funding an insurgency inside the USA (as far as we know)...they are foiling our government's attempts to establish a puppet government in a country that neighbors theirs. I'd think as a neighbor, they have more right to be funneling billions of dollars into Iraq than we do.

Got any proof of that? Is it in the same folder as the Iraq WMD evidence?

The U.S. is funding many many programs working towards this end.

    Some examples:

Of course, the bigger programs are more covert, and not run by organizations that provide links to their activities on their website.

Would you feel wronged if Hugo Chavez was funding an insurgency in America?

Would you assume that Iranians would feel any different if we did something like that to them (not mentioning the obvious "we have before and are likely now doing just what you suggest")?

    Much bigger example: $85 million

Again, this is the non-covert stuff. Anyone who thinks there's no covert funding going on is naive.

This is what happens if you focus too much on Fox news and too little on actual research on us-middle east politics. Iran will likely become our friend again; relations will eventually normalize between Iran and the US without war if the US government plays her cards right. In the mid east, everybody has a historical hatred of the Persians because they're not Arab. Persians ahve always felt an affinity to the west than to the nomadic arabs.

If I were you Kalns I'd try sorting out the problems in your own country before you concentrate on someone else's.

It wasn't something I'm saying we ought to do, merely wondering about it.

Theoretically I suspect that 'so many Iranians are against their government' - if such evaluations hold any water at all - in the same way that many people in the UK detest Tony Blair - i.e. dislike, but not enough to do anything about it.

Or maybe they're "against the government" but hate us even more. Sort of like how the Iraqis felt about Saddam.

it's not even necessary to fund an insurgency.....back in the 1950s the UK convinced the USA that "something needed to be done" about the government that existed at the time in Iran. Contacts were made with some Iranians who were against the regime, a plot was put together and in time the government was overthrown.

but is it morally acceptable to overthrow the government of another country? especially one that has been democratically elected......what do you think?
