Toshiba Portable Drive/Internet Issue

I have a MacBook Pro and when I attempt to use my Toshiba portable drive, there seems to be a conflict with the use of Safari and Chrome. I unplug the drive and surf away. Plug the drive in and no internet traffic. Any assistance appreciated...

Note: I did format the Toshiba drive with Disk Utility and can read and write to the disk.
