So I just got my hands on a Power Mac G4 "Sawtooth" (AGP Graphics). (20 GB / 640 MB / DVD ROM)

It came with an ATI Rage 128 Pro graphics card installed, everything works fine.

I completely wiped the hard drive, installed Tiger on the clean drive without OS 9 drivers.

I've gone on to ATI's website and downloaded drivers for the card, yet when i stick the new card in, I still get no video to the monitor whatsoever.

So, who here has upgraded the AGP card in an old G4? What weird quirky step am I missing?

Ok, firstly you need to tell us what model the new card is that doesn't work. ATI no longer makes any AGP video card that is compatible with the 2x AGP slot in the Sawtooth G4, so it would have to be an older card to begin with.

And typically you don't need to download anything from the ATI website either. All required drivers are included with OS X.

So yeah, I totally forgot to mention what card it is.

ATI Radeon 8500 Mac edition - this is the #1 recommended card to upgrade a Sawtooth with, according to my research.

So I just tried yanking the card out and sticking it back in.

And of course, it works now. No complaints here.

Actually, the "new" 9800 is AGP 2x and 4x compatible.

I have the 8500 in my Gigabit Ethernet machine. Works like a charm.
