Here's the story: I have a iPod 3rd generation. I dropped it about 4 years ago, after that it only displayed the folder with and exclamation point icon. I was able to get it into disk mode, but it won't display on my computer.

I recently bought a new hard drive for it, the exact model as the original hard drive. I replaced only the hard drive (not the connector), and it does basically the same thing. The only difference is, it connects via USB. iTunes recognized it as an iPod and the correct type, but I keep getting an error message telling me to connect it via firewire. When I try to connect it via firewire, it won't show up on my computer. I went into disk utility to see if I can erase the drive, and I still get an error message saying it won't erase it.

I have a MacBook Pro from 2008 running Snow Leopard– connect to this computer.
I also have an iBook from 2001 running Lion (?)– does not connect to this computer.

What could be the problem and what else can I do? Basically I'm doing this for fun and I don't need a new iPod.
