On my powerbook if i keep turning down the brightness eventually the backlight goes out, but this doesn't seem to work on any of the mac desktops...

On my G5 i've been setting the *put the display to sleep after* option in energy saver to 1min and waiting, but this is really time wasting, i'd love to be able to turn the backlight off as i do on my powerbook, or failing that a 3rd party app.

I've tried an app called Shades, and while it dims whats on the display until black, it doesn't actually turn the backlight off

    Any ideas?

I don't know about newer Mac laptops, but my old iBook G4 didn't actually went black. It appeared to, but the backlight was still on and if I looked very closely, I could make out the screen. Shades appears to do the same thing, albeit the more powerful displays in the desktops make it more obvious that the backlight is still on.

The backlight definitely goes off on my powerbook, the LCD itself is still on though, my old loo seat iBook did the same

It's like the first Game Boy color. It wasn't backlit (ie. you needed a lamp to be able to play) but everything was on the lcd whatsoever.

I think you cant turn down the backlight like you say without turning the display off.
