Turning off/softening the start up chyme

    Hello people, heads alwasys turns toward me whenever i fire up my macbook in class, is there a way to soften or perhaps switch off the apple "chyme" sound at the start?

    Mute the sound before you shut down and you shouldn't get the chime when you boot up the next time.

    If that doesn't suit your needs, you can use a third-party program like Psst or StartupSound.prefPane.

    Nope, not the only way. How about simply holding down the mute button before hitting the power button? Works just fine on my powerbook.

    When I first got my mac this really annoyed me, and I assumed there was a complicated solution. Instead, Don't want sound? Press mute :)

    Nnnoooo.. on my Macbook the startup chime still comes out the internal speakers if headphones are plugged in.

    Yep, the Mac startup chime ALWAYS comes out of the Mac's internal speakers (even on the desktops - they all have internal speakers).

    Thought so, but wasn't sure.. since the last Mac I personally owned before this was an LC 575 :)

    Have fun with it. Whenever they look at you, just say "Yeah thats right, I have a mac, and it pwns yours" or something.

    At the last few Lan parties, one of my friends who is using a mac just laughs at people when they look at his system when he powers up and the mac chime kicks in....

    He just looks at them and says... "Mac means sh#t just works... no fuss no muss..."
