Twitter for Mac today received its most significant upgrade since 2013, introducing a range of new features to bring the Mac app in line with the iOS and web experiences. Twitter for Mac 4.0 includes an updated design with improvements to icons, buttons, and interactions, and it brings a new dark theme to change the background from white to black.

Along with a new look, Twitter for Mac is gaining several new features like inline video playback, GIF support, Group Direct Messages, a mute option, and the ability to quote tweets. All of these features have previously been available within the Twitter iOS app and on the web. Today's update also includes a new Today Center Widget for viewing Twitter highlights in the Apple Notification Center on the Mac.

The Mac Twitter app received a minor update in August of 2015, but beyond that, the app has gone untouched since 2014. The last major version update ahead of today's refresh was introduced in December of 2013.

feels like the german release notes are more apt: "several bug fixes". and it doesn't even support split view.

Is there a way to get the dark sidebar back (without using the dark theme)?

Still no cross-device sync. I'll stick with Echofon I guess.

Great. First Twitter was updated and blocked installs on OS X 10.6.

Now it's been updated to block installs on OS X 10.7.

You must have a system capable of running the latest OS X in order to install a simple Twitter application.

I've never understood how or why Twitter is so vital to people's lives... Sometimes I feel like an old man.

Tapbots must be really angry right now.

Twitter ripped off their iOS app, and now it's their Mac app.

    Nice, finally.

But damn, they got rid of gesture navigation. I used to be able to use three-finger swipes to move between things.

Good God! Their Mac development team must work from 12 to noon...

    Such a glaring, obvious omission.

I still miss notification screen quick launch message for Twitter and Facebook. Instead of messing around with dark themes ( who cares ) they should perhaps look at a widget to put a quick post feature in notifications on iOS.

Why pretend that matching iOS brings this to any sort of decent standard. The mobile version is well below par.

    "No cross device sync!"
That's what I'm seeing in this thread.

Why the hell do you people think it's necessary?

It is constantly in sync, as the data is fetched from the same source.
Resyncing everything is as simple as refreshing the feed.

But hey, I guess you're too lazy to do that now, are you?

At least in my case, very buggy update. Updated it today and it keeps saying Sorry that page doesn't exist and keeps giving me the same notifications repeatedly which is frustrating. Sticking with Tweetbot.

Just read that Twitter doesn't really care about the app. In fact they initially killed it before deciding to outsource it to a 3rd party dev.

Also just realised how little it was updated.

Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.

But it's ok, cause like everyone else, I'm sticking with Tweetbot.

Hey quick shot, we know how Twitter works. :p

Cross-device sync means that you sync the position you left off reading on another device, sort of like a bookmark (in the traditional sense of position, not in the internet browser sense of which book you're in)
