Hello, I have a 5 day old MBP. I have had two Kernel Panics today. The ram is still stock too. Both times that I had the panic, I was on the internet and a page was loading. I ran the hardware test three times and it passed all tests, including the extended test. I verify/repaired disk and the volume passed. I have not loaded or hooked anything up different since the first day. I do have clear dock installed. I just uninstalled it to be safe. Anyone have any ideas what it could be, or what I can do to find out what caused it? I did a fresh install when I first booted the MBP the other day, as I do with all of my macs. So, I am hoping I do not need to do it again.

Also, I did the updates on day one too, so I am current there...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I would start over. Get rid of clear dock. It did that to me too. Also, do not install the Apple Keyboard update in the software update as it causes your MBP to whine if it wasn't whining to begin with.

Mine is whining, but I did the updates right away. Anyway to remove that update without a fresh install? I have a feeling a fresh install may be in order.

I was having problems earlier today and last night. I had to reinstall 10.4.7 as the first batch was missing something and that might be the case with you too.

first, go to about this mac, then more info, then click on software, if your update doeesn't have an a in the name (if it says 8j2135) no a), go to apple's downloads section and it's under the apple downloads

    From an Apple discussion

think I found a solution (used some information from xlr8yourmac.com). Apparently, the keyboard update replaces the file /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext

If you have a backup of this file, just restore it and the whine will be gone. Since I never make backups of system files, I did a quick Google search, and luckily Apple provides this package for downloads (actually targeted to programmers, but no problem). Download it from http://developer.apple.com/hardwaredrivers/download/usbdebug.html

I installed the package without the "-log" at the end. After reboot, the usual Mirror Widget trick works again.

After I did the nospleen my whine went away.

And I don't have to run the mirror widget, just run the one without the -log at the end of the file name, and then reboot. No whine here.

No, I installed it after... Now guess what! I just did a complete reinstall. While I was downloading the updates, Kernel Panic!!!! Now what? I guess I should return it? I swear, EVERY time I buy something from my Apple Store this happens... They think I am nuts. But, I took pics this time...

Here is one showing it passes the hardware test. Another showing the Kernel Panic that just happened 15 minutes ago!

    i wouldnt complain

As u can see in my post regarding my ibook, i too am getting kernel panics. I have had about15-20 today. I wouldnt compalin. I love my ibook, but im starting to think this might be a piece of junk, that they better fix.

BTW i hate windows, so despite my feeling that this computer is acting junky, i will stand behind my mac.

PS checkout the "ibook forced to restart" thread.

What did your kernel.log say? Could it be one of your updates? Apple's newest updates seem to be causing trouble with people.

Do this. Do a clean install. Don't install any updates, then see what happens. Then install one update at a time. When you get a kernel panic, you know. :)

I took it to the store and they said they would swap it out or return it. I just returned it. I am having too much bad luck lately.... Now trying to decide what to get.

LOL.... I am actually 99% sure I am going to order a Powermac. You can make it 100% if you send me your display! I will pay for shipping!;) Hell, I will fly over and pick it up too.

The only thing is that I am having a little reservation plunking down all of that cash with the intel pmacs right around the corner. But with my string of bad luck with my intel machines, maybe the PPC is a good thing.

I certaily wouldn't want a Rev. A PowerMac, but that's just me (and that's Intel or PPC).

Well, I can say that the MBP that I have is perfect. No whine, no nothing. Just a super smooth machine.

Here's my two cents. Have you done the firmware updates for your Mac? Apple did release Firmware updates that fixes various problems, Kernel panics are one of them. Other than that... there must be a bug with the update or something. Firmware.

Yes, the firmware was up to date... Oh well, it is back to the refurb factory. I hope no one here buys it, lol.
