I was just checking out some MacRumors users' desktops and I saw two things:
    1) There was a little iTunes thing in the bottom left-hand corner that showed album art and the current song with a transparent background. What is this called?
    2) A similar type thing, but with weather.

    Any help is appreciated!

I think that you will find they're called Widgets and these little apps do all sorts of wonderful (and also trivial) things. Have a look at this thread for a list of MR people's favourite widgets. A Google search will give you a whole heap of them and you can take your pick. Or Yahoo (they took over Konfabulator).

Also, for problem-shooting here on MR, do an adavanced search for threads having the key word "Widget" in it.

Welcome to MR and enjoy your time here! :)

Mmmm, the display for that one is very simple and elegant. love it. :) In fact, iTunes minimized view could learn a thing or two! ;)
