Just to let you all know that in the Gap sale the other day I got a smartish messenger bag thing that pleasingly fits a 12" iBook/PB perfectly. It's not padded, but the cord/twill type stuff is pretty thick and it all seems really sturdy. It's reduced to £7, so was a bit of a bargain.
