When I double-click Macintosh HD icon on the Desktop, new Finder window opens. A the left-bottom corner of the window there are two icons in the status bar. One is like 4 small squares, another is like pencil with the line across it. What do these icons mean? I cannot find any info about them...

The crossed-out pencil means you can't write to the currently selected item (but you might be able to write to a subfolder within it).

The boxes one? Not sure which one you mean. But it might switch you to icon (thumbnail) view, if it's the one I'm thinking of.
