at the end of the cord nearest the Superdrive. Contacted AppleCare via telephone and they setup an appointment at the Bay Street (Emeryville, CA) Apple Store to swap out my SD for a brand new one...

Not surprised to see this. Apple has had issues with cords falling apart for years(power adapters, mice, iPod cables).

Same here, just noticed it today in fact. Surprisingly this is the first time I am having issues with the cords with the exception of my first gen iPhone headphones.

Mine is doing the same thing. One of these days I will make an appointment to get it swapped.

Jeez mine is too. Is Apple very generous when it comes to exchanging them for new SD drives?

They should be since you can't buy Applecare for the MBA Superdrive which sucks. They even said if you have Applecare on the MBA it won't extend to the external superdrive.

    Update

Well, AppleCare called the Emeryville, CA USA (Bay Street) Apple Store and setup an appointment for me at 9:15pm tonight, but I was in the area at around 7:35pm, so I went standby. After a 15 minute wait, the Store Manager walked up to me and asked for my SuperDrive (boxed up already), she took it to the back and came back out with some paperwork for me to sign, then selected a new SuperDrive from the shelf and I was in my car about 5 minutes later. If you'll notice that the "new warranty effective through Dec. 16, 2009" and the "Return Date: Dec. 31, 2008" so overall, pretty painless exchange with a brand new wrapped SuperDrive. I highly recommend that you get to the nearest Apple Store or call AppleCare and ask for a replacement and they'll ship right to your door and provide a shipper box for the damaged SuperDrive. That damaged cord seems pretty common. Previously, I would keep my SuperDrive in my InCase sleeve in a separate compartment with my MBA, but now I've decided to keep it in its own box, since it has a small space to protect the cord during storage. PM me if you have any questions...

The box adds much more bulk. I'd venture to guess Apple should get their crap together on this. I don't plan on keeping mine in a box the entire time. It's going in my bag.

I'm waiting for Louie Vuitton to take my measurements on the SuperDrive. Or this one will do just fine...:p

iPod headphones are just a disgrace. I haven't had a single pair were the cable hasn't started ripping out of its socket.
