I have an external hard drive that I use with the PC. My PC doesn't have USB2 but when its plugged in I get a message saying that the device will not function at full speed - but works, however when I plug it into my powermac g4 it just says "USB 2.0" in system profiler and doesn't mount.

I have formatted the drive with disk utility while it was installed in the case. Is there not any way for mac to read a USB2 storage at slower speeds like the PC?

When you formatted the drive I am guessing that it was in the G4 and not the PC.

Remember that the drive format will have to be FAT32.

If you leave your Mac on 24/7 then just reboot it and then see if it mounts, If that fails then try to mount the drive from within the disk utility.

If you can't see the drive either in the System Profiler or the Disk Utility then I would change the jumper settings on the drive. Windows doesn't seem to care much how the jumpers are set but OSX does.
