So how happy am I at the moment. I've managed to score a work trip to Vegas for a conference at the end of January! I'm currently based in Australia so to make it out to the US (with someone else paying) is freakin' great!

Now, I've got two questions that you may be able to help me out with:

    1. I've got a 5.5 hour stopover in LAX on the way over. I get in at 9:45am and leave for Vegas at 3:10pm. I don't really want to hang around the airport for all that time so is there anywhere I can easily get to and hang out for a couple of hours? I'm not really fussed what I see, it would just be good to stretch my legs and grab some lunch and maybe see some sights after the 13.5 hour flight from Oz! I'd need to be back at LAX terminal 4 by 2:30pm at the latest.

    2. Vegas nightlife recommendations. Okay, now I know there's a whole load of nightlife going on out there but I could do with some help narrowing down the options. I like bars with good music (hip-hop, jazz, funk, lounge) and a crowd that isn't too wrapped up in themselves. A couple of nightclub recommendations plus maybe the names of a couple of the seedier bars ;) would be great. I'm not fussed about seeing any scenery out there, just the Vegas nightlife.

    Any tips appreciated!

If you want to see some real interesting stuff you can head to Venice, it's nearby. If you like In n Out there is one right next to LAX. Hollywood Park Casino is right down the street, but i'd suggest NOT going there.. You could also cruise into malibu, but that may be pushing it time wise. Santa Monica and the beautiful 3rd street promenade is close as well (they have an apple store).

Even though 5.5 hours sounds like a lot of time, it may not be if you're thinking about getting on a taxi, leaving the airport area, seeing some sights and getting back. Traffic can be really awful around the airport sometimes. I'd suggest not going anywhere that requires a freeway, and sticking to surface streets.

If you want to sneak in some quick shopping, the Promenade at Howard Hughes has a few stores to see. It's not really that exciting or novel, but if you want a nice view, go to the top of the parking garage. This place is extremely close to the airport, perhaps even walking distance if you've brought good shoes.

Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica is a really fun place to go if you want to walk around a bit. There's a ton of stores, street performers, cafes, and restaurants. According to Yahoo Maps, you'd be able to get there just fine without a freeway.

As for things like Hollywood, etc., I wouldn't count on it. Not in 5 hours.

Edit: Another possibility is Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, though this might be pushing it a little timewise.

by the time you get off the plane, through immigration (your first entry into the country at lax) and check in with all the security these days, i reckon you'll have just about enough time to sink a couple of tinnies at the airport bar!

i hope that's not the case, but i personally wouldn't plan on doing too much on the stopover there

oh, and good blag mate, have a great time!

My thoughts exactly. Also that is saying that the flight from OZ is on time.

BTW Life, what airline is your connecting on to Las Vegas? Some airlines make it easy to jump on earlier flights on a space available basis to Vegas.

Great Vegas Vervet Monkeys! I have a few favourite spots in Vegas. The House of Blues always has great acts. As does the Hard Rock.
For lounge I like Cleopatra's Barge (in Caesar's). Also Harrah's Carnaval Court outdoor patio. This place can be a lot of fun.
Margaritaville at the Flamingo is a new hopping place.
For seedier spots I would say The Beach. Or practically any strip joint. Cheetah's being my choice.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far guys!

Dotnina and Calvinatir: If I get the chance then I reckon that Santa Monica is probably the one to try for.

    Cheers! :D I will!

I'm connecting to Vegas with American Airlines. Not sure what they're like but if I can get bumped to an earlier flight I'll take it.

I know I'm being a bit optimistic hoping to get out and spend a couple of hours elsewhere in the US but I can't stand hanging around airports for longer than I have to. Presuming all goes well then I'll give it a go!

Thanks Inkmonkey! House of Blues didn't have a gig listing for end Jan start Feb last time I looked but it would be great to catch some live music while I'm over. As for the rest of your suggestions, I reckon that would pretty much fill the rest of my available time! I should do some work at some point I guess...

"It was the seediest dive on the wharf..."

Let's cut through the BS here. If you want seedy, you'll have to check out the Red Rooster. I met a guy from Arkansas a few months ago who told me about this joint, told me some stories and all I can say is - Whoa Baby!

I wish I could give everyone a play-by-play but some of the language used may be deemed too rough for the Mac youth. And although I won't post the link, it is not hard to find.

Quasi-savages take note. There is no smut or profanity on the site, just enough insinuation to get the pulse going.

The Red Rooster makes the strip clubs seem like PTA meetings.

time wise, you are probably pushing your luck if you plan on leaving LAX between flights. as was mentioned, customs takes forever to get thru and don't forget you've got to go back thru security to catch your vegas flight...ntm, you'll need to change terminals and the vegas one may not be anywhere near the international one where you arrived.

save your strength for vegas...you'll need it... ;)

Sweet Swinging Simians! A cabbie was telling me about that place when I was in Vegas recently. Isn't it a swingers club of some sort?

Give it a try. I have had little luck with American getting bumped to a different flight. America West and Southwest are very open to it.

Affirmative Inkmonkey. The guy I met told me he learned about it from a cabbie as well. He was in town with some buddies for a few nights and wanted to check out something different, something wild. They looked it up in the phone book and the only listing was for a Red Rooster Mini-Storage. They were instructed to go to this storage facility and pay the cover ($40 I believe) and then were given directions to the actual locale. Driving through the desert with absolutely nothing in sight, they thought they had been taken for a couple of hundred (kind of like buying Spanish Fly in Mexico). Anyways, they finally come to this place and it is hopping. Evidently, it is BYOB but there is a bar with bartender and they'll keep your stuff for you and mix your drinks (probably drop God-only-knows in them also).

My friend tells me that there is a group of couples nearby and he starts checking out this chick - mid-30s, lean, not bad - and decides to "John Wayne it" and approach her. The following transpires between my Arkansan friend and this anonymous swinging fraulein:

Arkansan: So are you gonna (insert derogatory oral act) or what?

Swinging Fraulein: I'll do anything but that.

My friend was totally rattled by her response, shaken by the firmness in her tone, outsavaged by her savagery. He sheepishly mumbled some small-talk and basically got back to his buddies. Meanwhile, her husband returns from the bathroom and she obviously tells him what just happened. They both look over and kind of nod their heads, whispering to each other.

For the next few hours, my friend said the couple flat-out wouldn't leave him alone. They kept trying to coax him into a private room. He finally told them that he'd meet them in one in a few minutes and when they closed the door, he and his buddies cleared out and beat it back to the strip.
