Read the fine print on this one, folks. Sounds like it's the same as the promo they ran a few weeks ago wherein you have to keep the iPhone 7 for 27 months as a Verizon customer to get the full credit that makes the phone free. If you pay the phone off or terminate the line early you lose most of the credit.

I think that information is incorrect, they just finally sent me the credit for my iPhone trade in, it is my understanding the next bill will have two credits to retroactively cover last months bill that did not have a credit. I hope that makes sense, it took them 4.5 weeks to process my trade in in which time I received and paid 1 bill, so bill 2 should have 2 months of credits on it, bill 3-24 will show both the credit for the trade and the debit for the new device.

That is how it was conveyed to me.

What happens if you decide to buy an iPhone 8 next year? Since the credit is split into 24 months even if the second bill has the first two credits on it, wouldn't you need to go through 24 billing cycles to receive the full credit? So assuming they do credit you for the first 2-3 bills, if somebody was to do this for Black Friday then buy the iPhone 8 when it comes out they would've only been credited 10/24 the cost of the device and have to pay off the rest. Genius for Verizon because they get your iPhone 6s trade-in plus 14/24th the cost of the iPhone 7. In that case Verizon is making money off this (~$400 trade-in + $379 to pay-off a base iPhone 7) and giving nothing for free.

You would still be able to upgrade to the iPhone 8 because the iPhone 7 is part of Verizon's annual upgrade program. As long as you pay off 50% of the device cost then you are eligible to upgrade.

I don't think the debit and credit are tied together, I believe they are separate line items. If so, the credit should continue until the entire 24 months are done regardless of what device you use between month 1 and month 24. I hope that makes sense, granted I may or may not be correct. For example, if I pay cash for an iPhone 8 (theoretically), I don't think Verizon will care that I am no longer using my 7, and the credit should continue to be on the bill until the end of the 24 month period. Someone please feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

The fine print states "*Up to $792 device payment purchase required. No money down for qualified customers. Less trade-in and promo credit over 24 months; credit starts within 2-3 cycles and ends when balance paid or line terminated/transferred."

From what I've gathered thus far, Verizon is doing this promotion this year specifically because they know a majority of the customers that do this promotion will upgrade to a radical new iPhone 8 next year. So depending on how exactly the bill credits work, then they will have only paid 9 or less months worth of credit. Though it would be a great deal, and the way it should be based on their advertising, if the bill credits did continue for 24 months regardless of whether you buy an iPhone 8 with cash or not.

Right, but if the bill credits stop after getting rid of the iPhone 7 then in many cases the cumulative amount of the bill credits received at that point will be less than the value of the trade-in.

  1. It's not 27 months.
  2. Hopefully someone isn't dumb enough to take advantage of this if they upgrade yearly.
  3. Someone is still welcome to upgrade next year, but they'd simply forfeit their remaining bill credits.

Still waiting to hear about trade in cost for iPhone 6. There release doesn't mention it, but they are trying to match Tmobile by copying Tmobile's deal and TMOB is offering iPhone 7 for $100 plus iPhone 6 or free with 6s. Keep the pressure on Verizon to match!!!!!
[doublepost=1479950685][/doublepost]Maybe Julie you have heard about the iPhone 6 from Verizon for Black Friday trade in???

3 contradicts 2 for some of us. I traded in an iPhone 5 which nets $400 on Verizon's plan after 24 months. If I realize half the value by upgrading to the 8 it will have been worthwhile. The key is to understand what you are getting and to make sure you're fine with that.

Perhaps, but that's not what this means. This is a Verizon play to keep people on its network for 24 months while the rebate is funded.

You are right. Verizon with its last 3 trade in promotions (including this one) worked as a monthly bill credit that was paid out over 24 months starting on the third bill cycle after the upgrade. They wait until the third month to start the monthly bill credit, which includes the first two monthly bill credits as well. If you upgrade your device, pay off the balance, or terminate the line, you will lose the remainder of the credit. You only get the full trade in credit, in this case a "free" 128GB iPhone 7 or a 32GB iPhone 7 plus, if you keep the phone for the full 24 months. Anything higher than those two models, because their retail cost at that point exceeds the $792 credit, and you will be paying the difference. So if you upgraded to the 8 after 12 months, you would have only received about $396 in credit and lost the rest when you upgraded. You always have to read the fine print with these "free" deals.

They did have a promo that ended at the end of September where they didn't split it over 24 months and was either applied as a bill credit or prepaid VISA gift card for up to $650 depending on the phone you traded in.

So please help me here. If you upgrade now on this deal from a 6s, for 9 months you will get a line item to bill you for the 7, and a corresponding line item to credit you for that same amount. Come September, you upgrade to the 8, and one can safely say they will offer that as a free upgrade for iPhone 7 users. At that time, the line item for the 7's credit will stop, but won't the line item for the 7's cost also cease? Those should both be replaced with the 8's cost and corresponding credit. If that is the case, you get a iPhone7 for free for 8-9 months, then upgrade to the iPhone 8 for free as well. I don't see a downside here, unless the pgrade offer requires that 50% of the iPhone 7 be paid off come September. I cannot find anything in this promo that states your iPhone 6s needs to be 50% paid down to be eligible, so assuming that is not the case, and you could trade in any 6s for a free 7 right now, then why not assume the same thing with the 7 to 8 upgrade in September? Am I missing something on the eligibility requirements?

You're basing your entire theory on them offering the exact same deal next year. This is the only year they've offered this deal, and there's no guarantee that they'll do it again.

If it's worth it for you to take that "risk," go for it.

Anyone locking themselves into a 27 month plan on the iPhone 6SS (aka 7) is gunna be mighty frustrated come next September.

Why?

If I decide after 12 months to upgrade to an iPhone 8 -

1) I have had use of an iPhone 7 for 1 year, instead of an iPhone 6s FOR FREE.
2) Resale is better.
3) I can pay approx. HALF the cost of the iPhone 7 ($300) to buy my iPhone 7, then sell it for a PROFIT (> $300)
4) I can then get an iPhone 8 no problem.

I don't understand any issues?

Meanwhile, you
1) Have an iPhone 6 or 6s for the next 1 year... a lesser experience...
2) Have less of a resale value....

It's a no-brainer to me.

If i still owe $150 on my current phone, and I pay that off.. would that be eligible to trade in for this offer? It's the Galaxy S6, so i would get the iPhone 7 for free according to this. I don't upgrade every year, usually every 24 months so i'm considering doing this.

I don't typically upgrade phones every year, I've been on a 2-year cycle for, forever. They gave me $650 for my 6 (6, not a 6s) in October, the phone was only worth $200 trade in at the apple store. It was also a no-brainer for me. I don't have to have the 8 when it comes out, I can wait for the 8s or whatever comes in 2018. Until then, I'm loving my 7+ that I picked up for next to nothing.

I am confused. I currently have Iphone 5s. And I am on verizon, but no longer on contract. Should I be taking up this offer? (I could trade in my phone but not sure how much I would get) I don't need to upgrade to new models so that's not an issue, but I do need to change my phone because my battery life is off. But it's the "fine wording" business that worries me. Is this a good deal? If I lock into a deal for 24 months, could I terminate as soon as that is over? Which model is the best to upgrade to: 7 or 7 plus?

  • Only you can know whether or not this is a good offer for you.
  • The iPhone 7 (16GB) costs $650. With you trading in a 5S, you would pay $350. They're giving you $300 for your 5S.
  • You aren't getting into a contract. It's an installment payment plan on your line. The cost of the iPhone 7 divided up over 24 months. Your trade in will show up as credits to offset the device payment plan on your bill. You could "terminate" as soon as your phone is paid off. It's not a contract. If you end or leave early, you forfeit any remaining credits from your trade in.
  • There are many threads comparing the 7 to the 7+. They're easily searchable.
Best of luck.

Thank you, so helpful, now I am clear I am not entering into a contract. I actually just tried to upgrade online and it says that they will only give $11.70 in trade credit for my 5s. That looks hardly a deal. I should then just keep the phone in case the new phone gets lost or something. But this means, monthly for I phone 7 is $27 a month ($650 full) OR a deal on I phone SE for $5 a month ($399 full) BUT until midnight tonight it is discounted from $16 a month). I have been googling SE. Is that a recommended phone? Sorry I have not looking at new models and am a bit clueless & Black Friday deal ends in 30 min. It looks to be a smaller model but OK enough? Thanks
