It is likely that you have the following

    1) Huge Log Files
    2) Incorrect Permissions
    3) Damaged Files

    To correct them
    1) Open Applications/Utilities/Console - clear logs
    2) Open Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility - repair permissions
    3) Open Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility - Verify Disk

Also, considering your system, you should be running Tiger for optimal speed and efficiency.

    thanks for the suggestions

i'll get to work on those.

However I thought Tiger required a faster processor than I have.

No, Tiger will run on your eMac (I'm running it on my G3 iBook). It's leopard that your thinking of, which requires a 867Mhz G4 (there are ways to get around that though). If I'm not mistaken, you can still get Tiger (OS X 10.4) from Apple over the phone, but that was a few months ago.
