Players of Blizzard's incredibly popular World of Warcraft are reporting the outbreak of a virtual plague that is spreading across major cities in the virtual land of Azeroth, infecting player characters at an alarming rate.

...and started spreading the Corrupted Blood disease to others who they came into close contact with. The infection soon spread into many of the cities and towns in the virtual world. Since the disease was intended to be a danger to powerful players, it tended to kill those less than level 50 almost instantly.

Has the plague made it's way to Doomhammer yet? lol

I think it's kind of cool this is happening. Adds an unpredictable aspect to the game that not even the creators know how to control.. lol

    Agreed :D

Don't know if this is common on the EU servers I play on. Haven't been logged in much lately.

Although I'm not into WoW, what an interesting concept! These MMORPGs are definitely in a universe of their own. Intriguing, I wonder how this will play out... Perhaps players will have to band together on a quest to find the cure...

oddly enough this intrests me enough to consider buying this game
(not seriously consider I cant stand paying fifty bucks for a game and then having to continue shelling out cash just to play) But the idea of a spreadable disease in a game is very interesting, I wonder if blizzard will find a way to include things like this in the game on purpose, course then it will be less interesting.

does the disease enitirely kill off your character for good or does it just kill him and you have to go to a graveyard and rise again?

Sounds squishy to me. I say "marketing." Its a great idea, a little too good. Something only Blizzard could come up with :). A very good idea at the least.

    Infection

How does the disease spread? Is it by contact with an infected character or is it air-borne?

very cool indeed - even if it was unexpected to reach the whole world. I'm thinking they'll have more of these in the future :D

From what i understand it is through contact. There was an article about this on the bbc site (or maybe it was the telegraph) and it sounds fascinating. Apparently the intention was for the plague to just kill weak characters who were around after the slaying on a certain boss. However the plague stayed with pets/familiars (i have never played teh game) and subsequently spread to other areas. The NPCs are immune but act as carriers. According to the piece there were literally fields of dead bodies.

People can respawn/regenerate/be reborn but they haven't managed to eradicate the plague. This must be a result of a series of programmed behaviours reacting inappropriately and it is, in a way, fascinating.
