I would almost promise you that this is possible. I see no reason that it wouldn't be, but I've never done this, so I could be wrong.

do you need separate copies of warcraft 3 on each computer? i have two computers in my house, to play a lan against myself and my sister, do i need to go buy another copy of the game?

I believe you at least need two separate keys. I think Warcraft checks to make this.

Hmm I'm pretty sure you need separate CD keys for each computer, even if you're on a LAN, but I guess I've never really tested it exactly...

But yes, Warcraft can communicate with any other Mac or PC running the same version (i.e. you must all have the same Battle.net update for each person to see each other).

lol? It is definitely possible to play between a Mac and PC. You don't need two copies of Warcraft, as long as you can get a disk image or 2 discs (burned copy or whatever). The serial key is only for the purpose of Battle.net where people play online. Same as what most people said.
