It's nothing really important or annoying. I'm just curious what might have caused this bug and if there's a way to get rid of it.

When I switch from any user account to my account. The background of my desktop is different from the original background while the cube is rotating. It changes back to the original background when the animation is done. I've had it since 10.4.2 (which came with my iBook) and updated to 10.4.3 with no change.

I took a short video to show exactly what I mean (in H.264 goodness :p :D)...

I like the red background that shows just after you switch. Is it one of yours or something from Apple?

Same thing happens to me. It started happening when I turned on where the desktop would show random pictures.
Only happens when the finder is up as the current application and then I switch users.

    Weird.

It's a picture from Apple. Apple has some really nice pictures to choose from. :)

Yes, I used to have that option on. I disabled it once and enabled it again, but the background locked up on that red flower. I restarted the computer, and I was able to change the background again, but won't go away from the switch user cube.

Also, it always happens regardless the current active application.

I had to track down the picture that was showing when I switched users and I deleted it. Mine was a picture of my dog, copied it and put it somewhere else and changed the name. I logged off, then, I logged back in and switched users and the problem is gone.

You'd have to look for that rose picture via spotlight and then change the name, and see if it would work. If it didn't work - just delete the file and it will definitely be gone (the bug).

I guess this is another bug on the list for Mac OS X Tiger.

Same bug!!! I thought I was the only one. 10.4.1 fixed it, and 10.4.2 re-introduced it. Unfortunately, mine shows the default blue "feathers" background right after.

The bug started right after I played with different wallpapers. This could have very well happened with you, too. You're picking your wallpaper for the first time, you choose the red one, switch it, and the red one gets "ghosted" into fast user switching.

Interestingly enough, my PC did the same thing once, except the alternate background appeared for a short time after booting up, not user switching. It was never fixed. Thank god that PC has been replaced with my G5!

EDIT: I might have been playing with the random picture setting.

    All,
Same problem here -- exactly the same problem. I was playing with random desktop after I bought a new iBook with Tiger and Blammo! Now the black and white pier is ghosted into the cube effect. I've been trying to resolve it off and on for a couple months (deleting .plists, enabling disabling user accounts, etc). I just tried what lilstewart92 said and this is what happened - renamed pier.jpg and then the cube effect picked up aqau panther blue as a cube ghost; I renamed that file and it picked up the plain blue background as the cube ghost... I've almost given up... Let me know if anyone resolves this as it is driving me crazy...

I've had the same problem on my iBook. Found it very annoying and now revision of OS X has fixed it (since 10.3.9, now it has 10.4.3 and still happens). I probably should've done a clean install.

As to the problem on windows when booting, it would be because Active Desktop is on. It doesn't start until Explorer starts, so any previous BMP file that was a wallpaper is the one that appears, and then when Explorer starts, the Active Desktop wallpaper replaces it. To fix that problem, turn off active desktop, change your wallpaper to nothing, then turn active desktop back on. Alternatively, don't use Active desktop and convert the jpeg image to a bmp.

Please tell me how you are getting that Apple in your sig.
Whenever I try, it is saved as a "?" - even when I set the font to something like Helvetica or Lucida Grande!

    N10248 - word.

I swear I had done this before -- but this time I deleted all of the desktop caches and preferences that I could find -- and restarted. It reset the desktop to the initial aqua blue and BLAMMO no more cube ghost...

It all started when I played with the automatic desktop switcheroony... Don't make that mistake! or you'll be visited by the ghost...
