I bought a new .mac membership off Ebay. It comes in the retail box, but Im wonder what exactly comes in that box besides the registration code.

Not a lot. It's been a few months, but I think it's just a small booklet describing .Mac and - maybe - some white Apple stickers. You're paying for the registration number, because nothing else in the box is worth much of anything.

    K. This is what I was wondering. If its nothing worth while I was going to email the seller and ask if he could just email me the registration code. Guess Id still have to pay shipping since they make money on it ($8) but thats fine. Still got it for under $40. :)

The .Mac box does NOT contain a disk of any type. It comes with a .Mac Quick Start guide (that includes your activation code), a booklet describing .Mac, and two white Apple stickers. Nothing More.

I just got mine last week.

You get Backup (and other .Mac exclusives) off of your iDisk (in the software folder).

Apple really should just sell the codes because there isn't anything great in the box and it could save them some money and with the savings they should lower the price on .Mac.

$31.50 + $8 shipping. How do these ppl get them cheap enough to make money selling them for that low?

I almost bought a family membership, saw one for $55 + $10 shipping Buy It Now, but I dont think Id use more than 1 account on a regular basis.

All the ones i've seem on eBay were "buy it now" and have the acvitation code emailed.

I think .mac's a good idea but when, like me, you're running a dedicated server, there's not really much point on it

You can sign up online, no box needed.

Oddly enough, its often cheaper (by $20 or more) to buy the box from a third-party online retailer, and have it shipped to you, than to sign up with Apple online.

May seem a dumb question.... but why is there an activation code?

Do you actually install software? Because I thought .mac was an annual subsription service...

I have .mac since the very first days of iTools, and have "upgraded" to .mac once it became this paid subscription service. Just wack in your credit crad number, and off you go.

Does the .mac box give you the right to use it for a year orso (thus no credit card needed)?

Its basically like a 1yr prepaid deal. Punch in the activation code and your 1yr sub starts.

    Ah... ok.
    Tnx.

So you need to use a credit card for the following years, or buy another box, I assume.

I got .Mac just a week ago. It has Apple Stickers and a booklet describing the service. You download the backup software online from .Mac

You have to have 1 character to make a post, hence the .

The poster asked "I'll bite, where did you get it so cheap?" I quoted myself from the first post in the thread that I got it from Ebay. (ie - read the thread)

CLear it up or you need further explaination?
