for 3d animation, cinema 4d is good, a lot of pro features but also a little bit smaller of a learning curve.

If you want 2D, Flash works well on the Mac.

Maya runs on the Mac and is a great 3D program. You can download a free personal learning edition from their website.

Blender 3D Is free and open source, but seem as pro as any commercial app.

The User interface is just quite different from other similar apps, but supposed to be very powerfull once you get the hang of it.

Just looked at the Blender 3D site.
I think I'll be giving that a go when I'm home from work.
It looks pretty impressive for free!

    Cheers for the link!

you're welcome, it's gotten very good reviews. For modelling you might want to try wings 3d - the easiest program I ever taught myself (in a weekend). And it's supposed to work well in combination with blender. You need a three button mouse for it though. And probably for blender as well.
