Just wondering what everybody's guesses are. Is the thickest part of the MBA the hard drive, in which case it could have been built even thinner if it were only manufactured with the SSD (which can be made very thin of course)?

The HDD clearance is apparently even compromised. Consider that they likely could only squeeze a single platter (80GB) rather than the higher capacity multi-platter Toshibas available these days.

As for the thickest part of the innards: the CPU with its weird little heat duct.

that entire thing is the battery and they can only get 5 hours out of it?!? my ibook can do 5 hours on half brightness...

5 hours for a laptop is pretty good..
and considering how thin it is.. explains why it's so wide
