    Are you sure that's a cold hard fact and not speculation?

    I would have thought iPod doesn't stand for anything. Perhaps 'Internet Pod' at a push.

    It DOES stand for something. It was in an interview with Jobs in the Telegraph (one of our better newspapers for you yanks). I THINK it stands for Pocket Organized Database.

    Then again, I may have just invented those words. I'll try and find the article!

    It doesn't stand for anything. It'd be IPOD if it stood for something.

    Do you spell laser beams as LASER beams?

    How about scuba diving as SCUBA diving?

    There was an article recently talking about the iPod and why Apple chose that name since it has nothing to do with music, transport, portability etc.

    The author speculated that perhaps the real reason would only become apparent later. The iPod now holds music, video and photos - perhaps later it will become clear that watching it on the go is only part of the story and it's a 'Pod' because it is designed to hold multiple items and be carried around. Perhaps when Macs and TVs have docks, it will be seen to be part of a wider strategy - or perhaps not!

    the 'i' comes from the original iMac, which was marketed as a computer that was really easy to get onto the internet with. Same with the iBook. The 'i' thing has clicked with pop culture and apple put it on the iPod basically just to take advantage of the brand recognition associated with the 'i'. I seem to remember that the Pod part is just a reference to the fact that it is a pod.

    It's a compact way of transporting your music - a pod for your music.

    I don't believe it stands for anything. I remember reading the very last page of a MacWorld mag and Andy Ihnatko was talking about the first time he saw an iPod within Apple's labs with some engineers. When he first looked at the iPod, he didn't know what it was, and was trying to figure out what it did when the engineers laughed at him and told him it was a music player. He was fairly disappointed, but it's a good demonstration of what the iPod could be.

    I'm just waiting for the day when Apple makes the iPods like poke balls, so that you can store anything and everything in them. :p

    IPOD=Interpersonal Portable Open Database

    That's what it stands for. Steve Jobs marketed the "i" for interpersonal like an extension of you. Hope that helps
