now i have a new blackbook on the way, what do you think i should do with my old powerbook 1.67? its on panther, with 1gig of ram and a battery that holds no charge whatsoever. my computer gets used for recording music in logic, and im upgrading to logic 8 with the new one.

so should i sell it? keep it? upgrade it? i do enjoy using it a lot (it has a nickname) and i dont really need the money that id make from a sale, but will it suddenly become obsolete to me? of course, it might crap out on me now that its warranty is expiring, and that would be annoying. or maybe it'll last for ages yet...

My main work machine used to be my iBook G4 (I was testing the water before going for a PowerBook) and it lasted very nicely. Still works and I still have it sitting down in the living room for when I want to surf in comfort while my wife watches her soaps. Although I have an MBP which I use all day I am glad I kept the iBook. The battery is getting pretty weak and I might just spring for another (its third) since it is such a robust and convenient little box.

Do I care that it is a PPC? Nope, a Mac is a Mac and it is running Leopard happily so it is as up to date as it needs to be. Started on Panther of course.

It's obsolete if you make it obsolete..

Let me make it even clearer.

If your needs exceed the power of the machine, then yes upgrade.

Otherwise, use it until it dies. Get a new battery from www.macsales.com, along with some ram and even upgrade to Tiger.

Simplest way I could possibly say it.

Now obviously I don't fit the situation..but my Mac Pro will never be sold on eBay for at least 7 years. It's a beast of a machine, it's coming off an Intel Transition and has so much life left in it.

I am in agreement that you use your Mac until your needs outstrip the ability of the current model to fill them. I have many of the previous generation models working for me in various capacities. I definitely feel I got my money's worth. I tend to drive them until they die as you can tell from my signature :D
