    Hi all,

So this isn't a new application alert so much as it is a survey to see what you all feel is currently lacking out there or would like to see in a new application.

My reason for asking is I'm taking a course at school this quarter where we get a few weeks at the end to design any app we want, and would love to get some ideas from you all.

    Thanks!

Software that does my readings, studies, and writes all my assignments for me.

    apple could release it as

    DVD studio Express.

iDVD cripples my creativity. No customizable buttons, and not enough options for DVD ROM content. There is also no support for subtitles for alternate audio tracks.. my hard of hearing girlfriend won't be able to enjoy my work without a $250 (edu) investment in DVD Studio Pro.

If DVD studio Express did for DVD what FCE does for video, I would be set. They could allow a limited number of audio/subtitle tracks, as well as a much more powerful UI builder. Of course, professional features would be left out (I don't miss them in FCE) and they would be able to price it closer to that magic $99 place.

    A mass renamer...

For files I rip off a cd that I want to remove or add 'The Beatles --'

Or something like that... but I don't want to rename all of the files by hand.

If someone was to make an application like that... like a 'rename all' feature... would be helpful.

If you are talking about making a program, let me know when you finish it, I think you and Mrmacman are on to something here.

I'll try and get going on it sometime today or early this week. Any feature requests other than mass renaming?

Also, I'm still open to other ideas as well since this one isn't big enough to be a final project. Keep the ideas coming!

    it's alright. :)

i heard panic software was working on a newsgroup app as well.

to be honest with you, i'm not so sure if there are any application ideas left that haven't been done already.

How about an open-source, generic scan utility?

I've got an old USB Scanmaker from Microtek but have no way to use it in OSX. Maybe I just haven't looked hard enough.

I would like an app that can search for and sort images based on the content of the image. It would make sorting through large numbers of images much easier. You could give it some parameters and the software would sort based on comparing the images found to each other.

The best websites I've seen were all made with Front Page, which, apparently is not made for Mac. What do we have to compare (with it)?

How about some thing like that?

I've honestly never been much of a fan of frontpage. I don't know about the newer versions, but the old ones always insisted on throwing in cryptic HTML and other stuff that made it very hard to edit manually. I also wouldn't doubt it if they pushed IE only functionality.

I highly recommend Macromedia Studio MX for all your web development needs. :) (How does that sound for a product plug?) Seriously though, I've been using them for the past couple of years in and out of school and they are absolutely phenomenal. You can even get 30 day trials of all their stuff off of Macromedia's website.

Check them out and let me know what you think!

I'm having trouble thinking of a great new idea for full apps but here are some of my needs/wants in no particular order:

    1. Port of EA Sports NHL Hockey or any decent hockey game from the last 4 years.

    2. MS Access compatible database application (iData): This is a major need. Access has its quirks, but it is popular. Many one-man small business are run on little Access applications complete with forms, reports, macros, etc. This app could drive more switching.

    3. iDVD plugin to support creation and burning of VCD and SVCD. It's kind of hard to fill a 4gb DVD with pictures, VCD is better for photos and not everyone wants to buy Toast.

    4. More iMove effects like guns, lasers and lightsabers. There are dedicated apps to do this and then there's Photoshop. Too big of a learning curve and too expensive.

    5. 3D objects as transitions in iMovie. Pinnacle Studio on Windows has this. You can have a 3D soccer ball fly across the screen to move you between scenes.

    6. Direct import from scanner in iPhoto. It should allow you to keep adding scans into one roll or smart album.

    7. Data entry on the iPod: Imagine a virtual keyboard is displayed on the iPod--use the scroll wheel to move around each letter, use the enter button to select that letter. It should have a database of common words and phrases. Could be used to fix ID3 tags in songs or to enter new notes, contacts, etc.

I very much like #2 above. iData would be a killer app if it worked well. Ideally it should be able to import and export files for Access accurately.

It was released, check this forum.

    Good ideas.

I like #3, VCD's are great... but why do I need another application to make them right?

Macromedia Studio MX? I don't think that works on a Mac....
I had no success finding a suitable Mac Web Page creator.
    I need help.
