According to a quick search from what I have read it is a part of iTunes (since 7.3) and has something to do with iPhone syncing.

The process is running on my system.

The file can be found here

    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework/Versions/A/Resources/usbmuxd

    Don't worry about it.

Yea, so when is iTunes going fully 64-bit?! I mean why is it a hold-out?! Odd.
