Although i agree with you in terms of 21st century thinking. A name like Gaye Males may carry some unwanted package.

Moving on, i think we have to consider that that this woman is probably in her 40's. My point being that 40 to 50 years ago, the term gay in reference to homesexuals, was perhaps not so prevelent, if at all in existance other then its meaning of happy.

I make this statement based on my observations of my Grand Parents, and other senior citizens, i don't consider myself an authority on this in anyway, so if i am wrong in my speculations, please correct me.

its probably even better than that - at her age I wouldn't doubt that she's married - which means she had to choose to take the name.....:p

I used to have a next door neighbor and his name was Hugh Jass. He was a big guy too, but I thought it was funny.

a friend of mine's parents divorced a little while ago, his mum's married surname was saunders. After the divorce, she went back to using her maiden name, Manly. A few years after that, she re-married and married a guy who's surname was Bird. She hyphenated her name to Manly-bird. Pretty unfortunate!!

Do americans ever refer to women as 'birds'?

Another friend of mine has an awful name as a result of remarriage: Gemima-Rose Hedgestridge-Blows. No joke.

There were two twin trombone players in my all-state band back in the day named Mike Hunt and York Hunt. Can you imagine the teasing?

    Regards,
    Gus

Teasing is wrong, it is very hurtful. I know from experience. I do know a lady with the first name of Gaye. She also was born before the meaning of words were changed for a perverse correctness.

i've said this before (a little off topic) but the word "gay" when used to refer to homosexuals is actually an acronym for "good as you" - it came about from some gay rights rally in the 70s i believe.

Seems a little ironic when people use it as an insult. Having said that, all words have conotations and implications so the meaning of the word isn't really defined by its origins, but by the stigmas and conotations that are attached to them

Maybe a myth, but I heard that Ben Dover's sister was named Eileen.

Maybe Gaye Males will marry this guy and change her last name.

Heehee, I went to HS with Richard Hunt as well. But we called him Rich.

On a side note, an English Prof at one of the colleges I went to was named Dr. Funk. I kept wishing he was a music teacher.
