I recently saw The Neverending Story and Flight of the Navigator DVDs at my local Best Buy and purchased them on a whim, as I remembered watching them as a child. After re-watching them, I realized why they had stuck with me and why, even today, they were captivating.

For me, these movies have very deep emotional ties. Just wondering what some of your favorite movies were growing up. Maybe we'll remind each other of films forgotten.

Without a doubt I would have to say the original Star Wars Trilogy. Pretty predictable and obvious I know, but they made a big impression on me as a youngster.

And to tie in with your purchases, I recently bought Tron on DVD – that was a nostalgia filled afternoon. :)

A few of my favorite films growing up were the original Star Wars trilogy, The Neverending Story, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Batman and my favorite of the lot Stand By Me. I'm sure there are more I just can't think of any of them at the current time.

River Pirates and The Adventures of Huck Finn. I've always loved those movies. I would watch them over and over and over. I wore out the VHS copies of them both, and so far haven't been able to find DVD of them. I've read both books more times than I care to share. I guess I find something comforting in the relics of Southern Gentry. I only wish things were still like that today. What can I say? I'm a Southern Boy through and through.

The TMNT movies made me who I am today (as sad as that may be). Does anyone remember the scene in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Secret of the Ooze when the turtles are fighting some Foot Soldiers, bust through a wall, and discover Vanilla Ice rapping at a club? Of course, the fight must continue while Ice "freestyles" a rap about turtles to the club. A few more:

    Goonies
    The Quest
Back to the Future (1 and 2, definitely not 3)

StarWars IV - I was 13 when it first came out. Also the Indiana Jones movies were cool too, but that was high school and college

Which Quest? The Van Damme one, or the one where the kid finds that steam-shovel in the bog?

I agree about the Back to the Futures. Everyone I know loves 3, but in my opinion 1 was the best, and 2 was a close second. I couldn't stand 3. But I guess I'm just not a western guy. Except for all the Clint Eastwood spagehtti westerns. The Good The Bad and The Ugly, Fistfull of Dollars, For a Few Dollars are some of the best movies ever.

Definitely some good memories, like the movies previously mentioned. But in particular,

Cloak and Dagger, Krull, Beastmaster, The Goonies (asian kid with the oil-slick shoes was my favorite), The Neverending Story, plus most of the Disney movies put out in the early 1980's.

If we are talking pre-teen years, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Zardoz and Altered States.

I had eclectic tastes... still do. :D

Not quite a kid when it came out but

    Labyrinth

and pretty much ditto Lacero's list.

Also add in Battle Beyond the Stars

    ----
edit: And Ben, I just thought it was a story about a boy and his pet ala Old Yeller. I didn't realize it was a horror movie.

I see I'm not the only one who bought Tron for its nostalgia value ;)

Two other films I remember vividly from my childhood:

The Princess Bride (INCONCEIVABLE that no one else mentioned this one!)

The Last Starfighter (pretty much sums up the video game generation along with Tron)

    Hmmm

Soooooooo many to choose from. These are not really kiddy movies, but mostly movies that I caught on cable as a teenager.

    Star Wars (first three)

    Apocalypse Now
    Dawn of the Dead (1978)
    Bad Taste
    Heavy Metal
    Excalibur
Monty Python & The Holy Grail
    Goodfellas
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
    Jaws
    The Thing (John Carpenter)
    Halloween

I could go on and on...one more of note. The cartoon version of "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe". I wish I could find that one on dvd.
