It's design is a little long in the tooth...and what will it be called...just Macintosh?
What's wrong with the name "iMac"?
Maybe he thinks Apple'll "correct" the inconsistency in the naming.
MacBook - MacBook Pro
iMac - Mac Pro
Logically, you'd rename the iMac simply the "Mac". There are no such thing as the iMacBook after all.
it used to be
so this time it should have been
Macbook, Macbook Pro
Mac and Mac Pro.
but maybe just calling it Mac is too plain and short
or maybe they should have inserted a word after "Mac" for the desktops.
i was thinking
DeskMac and DeskMac Pro.
becuase a desk it where it stays.
actually DeskMac is crappy
maybe they could've done this:
Macbook Mini*, Macbook, Macbook Pro
Mac mini, Mac, MacPro
*a possible ultra portable macbook?
or they could've added i before all the desktops and had it been
Macbook, macbook pro
iMac Mini, iMac and iMac Pro
actually i think iMac is redundant; you dont need i and Mac in the same title...
actually i dont know what they should've done.
"Macintosh" would be a terrible name for a product. For example:
Bob - I just bought a brand new Macintosh!
Joe - Woa, cool, which one?
Bob - I told you, I got a Macintosh!
Joe - But which Macintosh?
Bob - The Macintosh
Joe - Which Macintosh?
I agree that the design needs work.
Just calling it Mac wont work as the whole line are Macs.
Someone said feb/march of 07 I think... somewhere...
If you believe some random unverified post on this place, then it'll happen in the next few months. Maybe around when Leopard comes out... if you believe
What's wrong with it? I think it's the best designed (all-in-one) computer on the market. Surely they will change it sometime, but I can't imagine what they can do at this point.
As for the name, it's the original iComputer, and it's such a famous name I doubt they'll be changing it. Apple's recent name changes have to do with making sure "Mac" is in the name all their computers. iMac, MacBook, MacBook Pro.
Kinda funny, isn't it? We see all these mockups for iTablets, iPhones, true video iPods... but no one yet has even tried to top the iMac G5/CD.
Aside from the chin, that machine is painfully close to perfect design, imho. And the chin is only an issue for some people; my wife disliked it and kinda made fun of it at first... but I thought it was beautiful. I think she came around to seeing it my way at some point.
I'm not sure how I'm going to react when they switch over to a new design
There was a fantastic concept that flew around a few times... transparent when off.
Hehe... I guess then they'd have even more people asking "where did the computer go?"!
Like, a rear-projection iMac or something?
I have no idea how this would work.
So, Apple announced the original iMac in May '98, the next real revision was in Oct '99, a year and a half later. Two and three months later, apple announced the flat panel iMac in Jan. '02, and then announced the G5 iMac in Aug. '04, two and a half years later... we should be looking at a new design relatively soon... although, i doubt it'll be at this MW...
They could make the screen even thinner.....
but i don't see how they could drastically improve the design..... the iMac already is a 'LCD screen'
it's hard to design an even 'simpler' design
The only improvement I could see was removing the chin...but I quite like the chin so meh.
There could be improvement of the internal design to allow for desktop components and easier access for upgraders. But that would take away money from Apple so I'm certain they'll never do that. It's against the "Apple philosophy". As far as they're concerned, consumers don't upgrade, and they are mostly right.
i love the current design, and there's really no need for it to change.
however the chin on the 24" seems a little bit too big, if you ask me. proportionally when looking at other iMacs it's good, but i would rather see it being half the height it is.
Personally I would just like the ability to change the video card as and when newer ones come out... The 7600 seems a good enough card, but there are a lot better ones (even midrange) now!
That's because that mockup wasn't particularly based on existing technology when it was designed.
I'm sure Apple will overhaul the iMac design when something else captivates them. I have yet to see a particularly interesting to me (and feasible) idea in concept discussions, though, that's better than the current design. And the current design is prettier, to me, than pretty much every other computer available.
Nothing wrong in having a prominent chin!
I love my Intel iMac! The most complete and attractive personal computing solution imaginable!
All the past iMacs have been iconic designs and I wish I could have had the pleasure of each one to date. This is my first.
There is a possibility that a dramatic new design will accompany Leopard but the name will stay! I can't imagine what it will be like though.
However, most bets are on the present form staying for a while - most of the breaking technology is internal: PMR hard drives etc.
I like the iMac just the way it is and I like the name iMac too.
The iMac is a perfect name. But I really do prefer the iMac G4 design but I doubt apple will take a step backwards.
Here are the mockups...
Where are all the wires
the keyboard and mouse seem a bit outdated for a system that advanced. Perhaps they will invent something better soon. Maybe a touchscreen imac.
No offence to the OP, but change for the sake of change is pointless. Every redesign of the iMac was to solve a particular problem, or adopt a compelling new technology. The current iMac design is about as minimalist as you can get. Any changes from here on will be minor cosmetic ones (thinner design, smaller bezel etc...)
