    Hello,

At this point I have pretty much secured $400 for X-Mas ALONE(Parents give me $400) and my B-Day is 2 days after X-Mas which means I have pretty much have enough $$ for a Mac If not more. Don't call me spoiled as I want to fall in the Apple cult. :p

Anyway back to the original question...I will wait for the MacTels but should I get the first model?

I'd wouldn't buy a Mac with an Intel processor until at least revision B. You're looking at about a 1 year wait. So if you want my actual opinion, I'd get one asap.

At this stage I'm getting an Intel iBook as soon as it comes out. However, I have the luxury of a second computer so if it has some teething issues I can still use my iMac.

I'm not saying the new Macs will necessarily be unreliable, but if you need a computer every day then I'd have a back up ready just in case. I can't imagine this massive transition will be totally trouble free.

I'm going to come out and say this publicly. Nuts to the freaking Mactels. I've felt this was a bad move from day 1, despite all the reasoning behind it. To be perfectly honest, the move only makes sense for the portables. Desktops will be crippled, in fact, by moving to the Intel platform and all of its poor 64 bit support, and half baked dual core architecture. For me, the second the first generation Mactels hit the market, I'm going to buy up all the slightly older PowerPC Macs.

And for the record, despite what the rumour mill is saying about Mactels in January, I wouldn't hold my breath. The accuracy of the rumour mill has been steadily decreasing as of late. A couple years ago, the predictions were far more accurate, but now, software and hardware predictions have been way off the mark. Moreover, that dumb widescreen iBook rumour just won't die, despite it being passed over a couple of times. Stevie J said June 2006 to start the transition, so I wouldn't count on it happening before that time. Mr. Jobs tends to be late with his time predictions rather than early.

The G5 is great (albeit stagnated) which is why they won't be replaced until after the G4s. Give Intel a chance, by the time the Power Macs start using Intel chips, I think they'll be technologically far superior to what the PPC G5 would have been like. Of course, this can't be based on fact, merely here-say and munchkins. Predominantly the munchkins, they're the best source of Random Mac Knowledge™, or RMK™.
