I was downloading to my external hard drive via bit torrent, but then the external died, and now im left with 186mb of free space on my internal, from 9gb. I guess the files redirected themselves to my internal hard drive, but i cannot find where they are. ive tried spotlight and such, and restarting, but nothing. Im really confused.

How much gigs you had free before you did that? did you check the trash?...it might be a hiccup because the computer would be creeping if thats all you had.

    Have you restarted?

    i restarted, i emptied the trash, etc......i had 9gb before, now i have 180mb

i ran "what size" the program, and theres this folder called "private" that takes up 2.76gb, but when i double click it, it says its actually taking up closer to 7 gb.....something seems fishy there

try this to find hidden download folders

    try this:

    1. In the finder select your main system drive
    2. From the menu select Go->Go to folder...
    3. In the box that comes up type 'volumes' for the folder name and click 'Go'

In the mysterious view that should open up you should see a list of all your drives with network icons. A few will have folder icons. The ones with folder icons are actually secret hidden areas on your main hard drive that might contain the huge hidden files you are looking for.
If all else fails try downloading Omni Disk Sweep. This has helped me out before for finding huge hidden temp files. Let me know if this helps and good luck!
