I'm a Mechanical Engineering major here. But only until the end of the year, as I'm trying to transfer here for photography. Before this past August, I worked as a cashier at a local supermarket. I'm thinking of applying to CompUSA for this summer though, and I'll probably stay there through the year if I can get the job at all.

re applemacdude's sig: I love this page :D

Stay on as an Engineer, graduating with a profession is so important these days. And there are plenty of high paying jobs for mechanical Engineers.
I say, Pay the Bills firts then consider your workplace enjoyment. There are many people who have been to uni working @ the local supermarket, becuse they didn't greaduate with a profession, just an Arts, science or Philosphy degree.

I'm a second your Mining Engineernig student @ UniSA. And for the last 10 years or so there has been a very large vacume in the mining industry. Lost of positions for Engineers and very few engineers to fill them, and this is not set to change.

Welcome to the MacRumors: Forums mcarnes. Hope that you will become a regular. I would have to say that yours would be a dream job. I can't even imagine what it would be like to work for such a high powered person.

My wife is a Registered Nurse and works for a Home Care Agency. She does visits in patient home. So her car a Volvo is her office, spends a lot of time on the road. She enjoys her work, it's rewarding.

Currently I'm an Administrative Assistant to a Pastor friend of mine. We enjoy working together.

**** that. I ****ing hate this place, and the only parts of the program I like here don't require a degree in anything, just certification (we just finished up welding in my manufacturing processes class, now I want my own oxy-acetylene gear :D ) And I can do more that just take pictures, my family is heavily into music and music education, so if worst comes to worst, I could always do that.

also: I'd rather be in a job I'm happy doing, even if it doesn't pay well, than work in a job I absolutely hate, no matter how much it pays.

Definitely not glamorous: I'm a manager/groundskeeper of a golf driving range. The pay is OK and it's only part time work. I also have my own side business of doing demo recordings for bands and video (VHS, Beta, DV, 8mm) to DVD transfers. I'm feel lucky to be doing a bunch of things that I enjoy.

I used to program and worked for a typesetting company. The stressful environment combined with a developing case of carpal tunnel wasn't my cup of tea.

My dad owns a small company and I was originally just a "helper" - I'd help him with the computer when he had problems. Now I'm a proper employee, I'm a programmer. It's all in MS languages :(

I hope this cheers everyone up who doesn't like their job. I work in a factory. I build cars for a living. 80% of those cars are Camry's. Feel better about your job, now?

Actually, I like my job. I knocked up my g/f at 17, quit school. I could've gone straight to jail or drug addiction from there, but I got my GED and went to work for a temp service. I got placed at a Toyota plant, worked twice as hard for half the money and no benefits for 19 months, and was hired full-time at the ripe old age of 20. It pays extremely well, and the benefits are great. Free medical, cheap dental, company-funded pension(a rarity these days), and a decent match on my 401k. It isn't like the other factories that the temp service placed me in. Most of those, you stand in one spot all day and do some completely mindless task, one or two hand motions. I get a halfway decent little workout at this job. I would be HUGE if I sat at a desk all day! There are 10-20 different elements to a process, so your not just shooting one screw all day or something. Plenty of classes are offered to help your chances of advancing on the job, or they will even pay for you to attend college. I am currently waiting for a community college that is under construction in my town to be complete, then I am going to look for a program to go into.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting anyone quit school. I'm just saying, considering the mistakes I made as a teenager, I could have it a lot worse.

I always scan the "What do you do?" threads to find someone else here that has a job like mine. It never happens. I figured I'd just tell ya. Laugh if you wish! :p

Laugh? dude, thats tight! when i was in highschool my cross country coach who worked as a factory foreman at a Yazaki plant. He too didn't go to college... anyways, the guy is amazingly happy. Much happier then some of my dad's friends who are lawyers or doctors, went in to it not because they loved the field, but for the money... so now they're trapped between their half million dollar house mortage, their xwives, their current lives, and the secretary that they bang on the side... my point is, money doesnt buy happiness.
