Can we compile a list maybe?
Specifically I'd love to know about:
    AirVideo
    Plex
    VLC
    Netflix (redundant, I know)

    Thanks!

    Edit:
    So far it seems like
    Working:
    Video app
    Youtube app

    Not Working:
    Everything else

    LAME

    Do you mean AirPlay?

Air video can stream only audio. We don't know if that is a limitation of the OS or if the apps just need an update.

Nothing works with AirPlay except native apps. Not even embedded videos within Safari. I've tried all the apps in your list except for Plex.

Yes you can. Go to the Apple TV and Home Theater forum and click just to the right of your title and it will become editable.

    Air Video
    KLEXi

do not work with video, it only transmits the audio...perhaps a jailbreak solution in future.

I can get the audio from videos I have in iFiles and VLC to play through Airplay, no go on the video though, too bad. Maybe as apps update for 4.2.1 we'll get more compatibility.

Someone claimed last week that they knew for a fact that Zumocast video would work with AirPlay. Can anyone confirm that?

In any case, VLC won't work because that isn't a true video transcoder, it just natively supports some of the codecs/formats that aren't normally part of iOS.

I'd also like to know about the ABC app and Hulu Plus (because of licensing issues, I don't expect either of those to work even if AirPlay gets a subsequent update).

Ditto. Airplay is useful now, but until pretty limited until 3rd parties are in the game. I suspect/hope we'll see a bunch of updates from 3rd parties. If not, no Apple TV for me.

Hulu Plus uses a custom player because of the ads (kind of what VLC does too) so it's very unlikely that it'll go the way of AirPlay, I think it would make more sense for them to come out with an app for the ATV

Can developers comment on whether there is 3rd party support for video streaming in the latest SDK.

Plex appears to work. The AirPlay menu comes up on the control bar in Plex and I can select AppleTV, but I cannot check it out to see if it works. The AppleTV is in my kid's room while I'm testing it out, working out kinks, and he is sleeping now.

I suspect that is audio only, just like nearly everything else.

I can also report that the iTunes app doesn't support AirPlay video when you preview content. But I guess given the 30 second previews you aren't going to have much time to switch video from the iPad/iPhone to the Apple TV (since it seems to take several seconds for the switch to occur). It would be nice, however, to be able to preview content on your big-screen TV prior to purchase (since the iTunes app on the new Apple TV only has previews for the rentals).

The iPad's Photos app seems to work only some of the time (it's very hit and miss). I've seen a range of symptoms, sometimes the slide shows don't work at all (or remain frozen on a previous image) and I've even seen cases where the slideshow on the Apple TV just dumps you back into the top-level menu on the Apple TV (almost like a crash in the playback). Definitely unstable -- at least on my iPad and Apple TV.

Playback from the Video app works fairly well. I watched about one half hour of streaming HD content and it seemed to perform decently even when I was using my iPad for other tasks. I did have one instance of a failed switch back to the iPad -- the content wouldn't play to either device until I completely exited the playback screen.

You are right. Plex is audio only.

Just a question, can I airplay anything from the iTunes app or just purchased content?

It shouldn't matter. If it's in iTunes, you should be able to AirPlay it.

There were plenty of warnings on these forums to (over enthusiastic) new ATV2 owners that AirPlay was NOT going to open up the world of video. I remember stupid apple blogs opining about how this was a going to be a trojan horse apple would use to destroy the cable industry...ofcourse..apple blogs and analysts are almost always wrong.

You will get Itunes proprietary and maybe a very small select group of 3rd party videos showing on your ATV (youtube). That will be it...there will be no hulu, there will be no VLC, there will be no plex, there will be no espn3 or MLB.tv...period.

Anyone who owns an ATV1 knows Apple's track record in this market...you will all continue to be disappointed time and time again...

I think it's way too early to make that call. Because the ATV 2 is app capable, it's more likely gain access to other content than it is not. Jailbreaking may be the only way for now, but I can't believe Apple will remain out of the game for long. There's a reason they made the device app capable. This was no coincidence.

That is very disappointing. I guess I will stay on the jailbroken 4.1 for now. I was going to move to the 4.2 with airplay but that kills it for me.
