I have a list of games I wanna get, but can only afford one at the moment and am looking for suggestions of what to get. I'm leaning towards NFS Most Wanted.

I use a macbook pro with 1 gb ram 128 mb vram and windows vista rc1

    My List in no order:

    Grand Theft Auto
    Mafia
    Madden 07
    Godfather
    Test Drive Unlimited
Need for Speed Most Wanted Black Edition
    Half Life 2
    Scarface

    thanks

Unless you have a gamepad, avoid all of them and get Half Life 2...

It seems by your choice of games you should have just got a console...

HL2 is the only game on that list I'd even consider at all. NFS Most Wanted is alright, I guess, maybe.

    YMMV.

Get HL2 and HL2 Episode One.

    Half Life 2.
I was reading one of the posher game magazines yesterday (Edge?), they had an article about the top 10 (maybe 20) PC games of all time. Basically HL2 topped it. It is the best computer game I've ever played. I just watched those Episode 2 trailers and it made me think - nothing else matters anymore in gaming.

HL2 is a great game, I have a thread buried in marketplace with a bunch of games Im willing to let go cheap including HL2,Doom3,Far Cry, etc so for the price of 1 new game you could get a few of these from if interested.

I wouldn't play Episode One until you've played regular HL2 first. (Ep One is really short BTW)

Aye Episode 1 was a huge let down, thankfully Valve have the problem fixed. Episode 2 looks godlike and you get Team Fortress 2 with it. Now that's worth £19.

really? I thought Ep 1 was better than the full game. I liked having whats her name around the whole time, too many FPS's are the lone wolf style and since Freeman doesn't talk at all, its kinda nice to have someone chattering away at you.

Now that is some serious overhyping right there, Half Life 2 isn't THAT good, in fact, out of all the 3 big shooters of 2004, Half Life 2 is probably a third for me (1. Doom 3, 2. Far Cry), its a great game but definitely not the best computer game I have played personally, in fact its not even "one of the"...

That's a nice opinion and you're very much entitled to it, it's a pity it goes against the whole world though.

    and for good measure...
though yes. Doom 3 is very good, IMO alongside HL2 for sure. Though Farcry really let me down as far as FPS games go. felt more like a tech demo than anything else.

Far Cry has 1 thing none of these others have and thats a true free roam non scripted path. In my view that makes it better then either HL2s or Doom3 follow the paths.

I suppose that's one factor. I for one love following the story of HL2. It's a mystery and there's a variety of ways to approach problems.

Right. So I suppose the shoddy uninteresting story, the rubbish AI, the huge slowdowns when in the boat etc levels, the lack of any strategy, lack of any original weapons or genre changing elements, the lack of anything fast and fun are all forgiven because it's free roaming? Though not even truly free-roaming (I can't just walk over to the end level). Do not confuse non-linear with free roaming. GTA is free roaming, Farcry is non-linear.

Free roaming - endless sandpit, a collection of non-linear paths with or without a clear goal. Non-linear - Levels may not follow in the same order but all lead you to the same, clear goal.
