Got tired of having a mailserver, so I switched over to gmail about 3 months ago. I love gmail but get tired of the slow interface...even though I have DSL. I just started playing with Mail in OS/X.

I still us gmail but forward a copy locally.

Any comments about it, yea or nay?

I use mail for both my gmail and aol accounts and it works very well. I love not having to go to aol.com or even worse, use aol for mac os x to get my mail. :)

    Mail.app + gMail = a match made in heaven

There are instructions on gmail's web site on how to configure Mail to work w/ gMail

yeah, for gmail and spymac mail (which is down constantly... that site could really take a lesson from macrumors, namely, the quality of a site is determined by the quality of the posts and the members, not the eye candy). It works great!

I use Mail for Gmail and never had a problem.

I would like to use AOL with Mail, but I hate the way it automatically adds it's own folders into Mail so I won't use it. If I could configure AOL in Mail the way I can with Gmail then I'd be happy.

What would you recommend for an app in the status bar, like the gmail checker? Something that isnt a hog, preferably.

I just keep Mail running. I press the red button to hide it's window so the only way I know it's there is the little black triangle under its icon in the dock. Each time I get mail, it makes a new mail sound and I can see the icon in the dock telling me how many messages are unread. It's great. :)

i will also praise how well gmail works with Mail. I also use it with my hotmail account even tho trying to set up a new account using httpmail seems to be busted.

I have been using AOL with mail long before, then I used both AOL and GMail for a transition. I have successfully switched, and now I just have Mail + GMail. I love it!

    Also, how about thunderbird?

I would say the only advantage would be that you dont have to wait for the web interface. You can use it offline too, if desired.

Although I am pretty highstrung on IMAP but I dont HAVE to have it. I like being able to access my mail from any machine, not have it all on one machine. With Gmail you can do this, so it works nicely.

I did just notice with mail.app, there is no way to 'backup' your mail and settings through the gui. I will do it through a terminal but you would think they would make a wahy to do it simply....for non-CLI people.

I have 6 active email addresses on 3 different servers, one standard POP3 server, one is GMail (via POP3) and the other 4 are IMAP accounts. The GMail account works the best out of any of them I think. I use Mail. IMO, it really is the best email client available for the Mac.

Yeah GMail with mail appz rock solide, not like spymac with mail wich often got problem with password espacially the outgoing server and is down often. Spymac said they changing server and version of software over a month ago and they still have problem to get it to work, my account is still down half of the time since then. I looking to switch completly to GMail soon, as soon as it get out of beta and we know what is the price if any, condition of usage, etc.

I have a mail question. I have is set up to a POP3 account, and it downloads email from that account just fine. However, when I delete email within mail, and then empty mail's trash, it seems that it does not delete the mail from the server, even though it warns me that it will do so within the mail app as I confirm deletion. Any ideas as to why this may be happening?

Mail.app is apple's best and who else gives 2G of FREE email? Definitely a perfect combination.

I use mail.app as my main mail program and love the interface. The junk mail filtering is also pretty good. My only gripe is that they haven't implemented certain message options (e.g. request a return receipt) that you'd find in other mail applications such as lotus notes, outlook, etc.

I love Mail, but find that some folks that I have to send e-mails to, essentially my wife, who uses a hotmail account, doesn't get half the e-mails I send her. I have a .mac account and use Mail as my program. It's not in her junk, it just doesn't get there??? Very strange. I can send it to her from my .mac account via Entourage, and it works great. But I'd like to convert entirely over to Mail. Any thoughts??/ (Oh, she won't change from hotmail. Lord knows I've tried that one!!!!!)

does anyone know if GMail applies it's filters then passes stuff on to Mail?

I've got a few Spam filters on my GMail account and I was wondering if I have to set this up in Mail to or whether GMail will sort that out then forward on to Mail.

I completely disagree about the receipt issue and I commend Apple for leaving this out. Receipts are a waste of time and space, not to mention they are unnecessary and irrelevant. :(
