Adium supports MSN and AIM, among others.

I guess if theres no money in it for M$ then there no point in rushing, M$ gets money from Office:Mac and so you will see them working on that most of the time. MSN Messager does come shipped with Office, maybe they have a new version but im not counting on it :(

why can't? you mean why won't?
if you mean 'why won't msn make a better version of messenger for mac?', then just think about what msn stands for. then remember what os you are running. i think that covers it.

It is my understanding that there will be no more free versions of MSN Messenger. You are going to have to subscribe to MSN. However, I am not aware of the Redmond Monopoly's timeline to cut-off the the non-paying users.

would you care to provide a link to this rumor because i believe that is all it is a rumor. microsoft will lose their market share in the messenger market place and serves them advantages to charges for the service.

This was all reported sometime ago. It is part of Microsoft's plan to eliminate its nonrevenue-generating ventures. Much was made of Mac development of IE being dropped. However, IE will be dropped as a standalone browser on all platforms. In Windows, it will be rolled-up into the OS. On the Mac, Microsoft is supposed to replace IE with the browser component of its new MSN client. The MSN browser will have a completely different browser engine.

huh? msn messenger makes money with the ads, and the deals with msn and wireless phone companies. lets not forget they are making money globally not just in the us.

Exactly how much revenue do you think is generated by ads targeting primarily non-paying customers?

i've looked around but i can't find anything on the net about that move. If you wanna give us a link to an article or anything that'd be great, but so far you're the only one i've heard this from.
i can see them dropping the browser, they certainly don't make any money off of the mac IE, but maybe they consider messenger a revenue generating thanks to the little ads, albeit a fairly small revenue.
i can't see them thinking they'd make any more money that way. who would pay them for messenger when there are so many other options?

Microsoft is not trying to force you to pay for MSN Messenger. It is trying to coerce you into joining MSN. Microsoft has been trying to make that turkey fly since its inception. Instead, it finds itself with a popular part of the service in MSN Messenger, but MSN Messenger costs millions to support but generates no revenue. What does Microsoft do now? It could abandon MSN and leave the subscriber-based online service market to AOL. Instead it going to try to leverage the popularity of MSN Messenger into paying customers for MSN. My prediction: it won't work.

they won't lose their market share to aim/icq, yahoo, etc. It makes more sense to get ppl to use your product than show ads then the ppl who don't want to pay goto another service. microsoft is all about standards. they want to have the standard, they want everyone to be in their microsoft world. when i say world i mean world. you not thinking of in a gobal sense which you need to be. msn service is not everywhere in the world but their messenger is. msn is only msn messenger that i have seen that can display chinese characters without third party support. if they limit themself to just msn service they basically cut themselves off from the world. they won't do that.

i agree with a lot of what you're saying, but you still haven't given us any links or any proof that this is actually what microsoft is planning to do.
I could see a company trying to use a popular product to get people to chose their service, and i agree that in this case, it probably wouldn't work out at all. I just can't really imagine microsoft thinking that it would, either. But hey, show me something concrete and i'll believe it.

i just clearly stated how it would hurt microsoft to only let msn user use msn messenger. this is all about money but your just to dense to think the msn messenger doesn't make money or you have an agenda to spread rumors.
