because they will certainly be the last to be switched over to intel proccessors. why?

because of the applications. if pro apps aren't universal or intel-native then the pro machines aren't going to be all that great now are they?

once Adobe and Apple's major pro apps go universal then we'll see the need and people clamoring for the Mac Pros.

as of right now, they wouldn't be all that great.

Unless Apple goes with the current Dual Core, 64 EMT chips I doubt any new Power Macs will show up. It's supposed to be something fun anyways.

I don't know if you're just having an argument for arguments sake or not, but come on, it seems really unlikely apple will switch the power macs over right now. yes, the mac book pros are pro macs, but not like the tower systems are. Those are serious workstations that are almost entirely useless to many professionals right now if they were intel only. They need more time for the transition to complete. And yes, new macs are fun, but it seems obvious fromt he tone of the invitation that its not about powermacs. when apple says fun, doesn't seem more likely that its about music or video or something like that. If you want to predict new powermacs, go for it. Go out on the limb and laugh at everyone else if you're right. but just about everyone else sees absolutely nothing pointing to the powermacs and plenty pointing to something else.

Nope, you're still a bit early on that one. If anything, the Intel PowerMacs could get announced at WWDC, but would have shipping dates months out from then. Even that is pushing it though. At the end of the day, Intel PowerMacs will not be in users' hands until the fall.

One of the other major reasons why this will be the case, along with what PlaceofDis and others have noted, is simply due to the timeline of Conroe and Woodcrest. Plain and simple.

Yes because the G4 was getting a very elderly chip to be inside a 'Pro' notebook. The dual/quad G5s can hold their own against PCs for the most part. The G4 next to the new PC Core-Duos would have looked very, very lame.

I think that the LAST macs to be released will be the xserve. I think that the Pro PowerMac will be out summer. apple plans to release all this years. If they leave the powermac too long it will be just like the powerbooks, long time with out an update, and yes there are people who want an intel version, I am one of them, and will not spend any money until it is released.

If they annonced the new Power Mac so soon they would have to use the old Dual Core P4 with netburst technology. This is not going to happen. It can be seen in the new update to 10.4.5. With this new update apple scrapped support for the old cpu's power saving features and the LAPIC timer and the power saving features in every pre core duo chip. Based on this all future Macs would have to use either the core duo or a new chip that is based on the new core duo power saving features and the new HPET (High Performance Events Timers). These new CPUs will not be out untill late this year.

I personally think that 23 feb 06 will be either intel pro apps demo, Mac mini for sure, I don't think a new ipod, we just got 2 new ones, nano and video. Maybe a wireless phone that give GPRS via bluetooth to the MBP completing a solution. Remember Apple is a turnkey solution company. There are integrating technology and solutions. EG iLife ipods fits together so do the pro apps.

May be an new intelBook this for sure, the iBook is also very outdated.

But the PowerMac i do see in summer to fall, and xserve in October.

Switching to intel is a slippery slope. Once people switch they want to go all the way. I will not buy another PPC, just because in the future and I do not know how long incompatiblity will surface because technology will move on. Rossetta is a temp solution to move to intel, there is not backwards compatible. High end apps will be adapted to the new intels, if not the next version of software(like adobe) but the release after. I know I don't see the bennifit in supporting big binaries when all the products being sold over the last years are intel(future looking back).

So by my deduction this intel all buy end of year. I also see intel in ipod and if there is a apple phone that too.

Remember when the announce intel, Steve job said, anwsering where intel that intel had products that fitted with apples future products, and he was not just talking computers. I seen 486 in cell phones, the first smart phones where 486 chips, low power, with memory and devices on chip. In 1995 intel had the 486 in the quater of the space they used to. so for the company I worked for, they packaged mem and devices needed into the rest of the chip. I worked by the way on this companies prototype Smart phones / data services.

That's because a Powerbook G4 is an embarassment. A Powermac G5 with four cores is not an embarassment.

I wouldn't usually complain about this, but there are so many mistakes in this thread (from several posters). So repeat after me:

    Mac
    MacBook Pro
    PowerBook
    Power Mac
    Mac mini
    iBook
    iPod
    Xserve
    intel

    and while we're at it:
    AirPort Extreme
    iPod nano
    iTunes
    iMac
    iEverything else.

Yes, I'm a fascist when it comes to capitalisation.

I agree, I think somewhat alike. The xServe will be the last because it is the hardest to engineer after the MBP. They are 1RU but where the engineering comes in is the integration of backup, hot swapable etc. This will take some time to put the intels in. Also to get the correct intel chip. it will be an xeon, but remember xeon is what ever flavour of the month for intel, it not a set core development, xeon just means server not core.

I see the that the powermac intel version has to come this summer, with duo core running over 3 Ghz, It has to, AMD is stomping on performance and Apple now has to compete in the high end PC market. So they don't want there useres going over to an adobe / amd / windows vista solution. It has nothing to do with the G5 but come summer the G5 is 1.5 years behind the compertion.

My English sucks. Sorry deal with it.

But it could be argued that it represents Front Row, which was released on the iMacs announced at that event.

Leopard is not going to be available to the public until 2007. That's my take, and I'm willing to accept wagers if anyone feels like gambling.
