Wifi trying to connect to random networks

Hey -- I have "Ask to Join Networks" turned off, as usual (so I should have to manually select unknown networks if I want to join them). Yet a few times since the 8.4 update, my phone has tried to automatically connect to several different unknown networks -- brought up the username/pw screen, or displayed "Unable to connect to...[xxx]." Why?

Perhaps you joined or tried to join a network somewhere in the past and haven't been around a similar one for some time until recently? Like let's say some widely present one from Starbucks or McDonalds or one from Xfinity or AT&T or something like that?
