will panther cure this?

Did a clean install on my i-book. Installed OS 10.2.1. Tried to upgrade to OS 10.2.8 combo. Unable to do so even though I retried update numerous times and also ran disk utility form CD install disc. Error message I get is upgrade has encountered a problem, try upgrade again.

Will installing panther cure this? Or will I run into trouble installing panther as well?

Can't hurt to give it a try... specialy if you were going to use Panther in the long run anyway... I would do a clean install of Panther... instead of the update.
