So I have not updated my iphone for a very long time I'm currently on iOS 4.3.5. If I update it will the lock screen look different?
I mostly just do not want text message previews on
    (sorry if that sounds confusing)

the lockscreen will look the same, but it will enable notifications by default.
It's customizable though, so you can turn off previews, or even turn off notifications on the lockscreen totally.

Wrong. The lockscreen will be different. There will be a camera-access slider to the right of the slide to unlock bar, which wasn't there on 4.3.5.

Text messages preview can be turned "off" under the notification settings as usual.

    Well I'm updating it.
Is it normal for the backup to be quite slow?
And if it deletes everything and I restore it will I get everything back?

If you have a lot of content on your phone, backing up will be slower.

After updating, you can restore from this backup and everything will be exactly the same, including settings.

After the backup it said "restored to factory settings" and turned on that way?
But on itunes it says "restoring iPhone from backup?"
Will it have all my stuff back on soon?

Man O man, on an iPhone 4 you should have updated to 5.1.1 and stayed there.

Since that's no longer an option for you, you'll have to weigh the positives and negatives to updating at all.

Lot of pros and cons out there and what's on the lock screen may be the least of your issues.

What are the pros and cons?

So far I'm not having many issues at all
Will I still receive normal texts with iMessage on?

Not to sound rude, but why are u obsessing over text messages?? Why would u think that after u update text & iMessages wouldn't function properly? I'm confused as to why ur worrying about something that is such a non issue. Of course it'll work exactly the way it should.
