Ever seen a banner ad with Windows-style "Click Here" buttons...on a mac-centric website?? Maybe I don't understand how advertising decisions are made, but it seems like a quick way to waste money. What Mac person will even click?

Thinksecret runs them fairly often, and I just saw one here here on MacRumors. What's the reason for running them, to rob the dupes of their money and then laugh at them when they can't figure why we won't do business them?

There aren't many mac users, and most PC users don't know much
about computers, so they will fall for those. Yeah, people at MR
know better, but does the common person?

Yeah  ;) :D , but still. SOME people will fall for them.

Since I have switched to Mac, it find it nice that I don't have to think when I am closing pop ups. With my PC I always had to be careful to click on the right X to close the window. (Boy if you click on the wrong X, you will get hundreds of those darn pop ups.

lol, true true. It is easier on Windows XP bc the windows look so
much different, but I know what you are talking about.

I hate when you go to one site, that starts a whole slew of pop-ups. ;)

    Re: Windows Banner Ads

ThinkSecret, MacRumors and many other sites use AdNetworks which provide many of the ad sales. In general, these are untargetted ads... the ads are bought and sold in bulk to the general web public. We do sell ads directly to Mac Vendors - such as PowerMax.com and Sik.com as recent examples... but those are still the minority of ads.

BTW, about 30% of MacRumors front-page traffic is from Windows machines.

You're right - I bet a fair amount of people do surf from Work where they have Windows machines.

But I also think MacRumors does tend to draw a higher proportion of PC users who are curious or looking to switch.

I thought MR and others might have some sort of bulk plan, but the irony still is pretty funny.

    Popups...

Really? I hear some popups "close button" actually executes some commands (like make a bookmark etc) then closes.

The great thing about those popups and being on a mac is when they try to download and run a .exe file. I always chuckle when that happens.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Windows Banner Ads

When I switched, my mac friend told me to go to www.sitelink.net to find Mac information. Out of the rumor pages there I settled on MacRumors.

So at least 1 person from that 30% was a windows user switching. :)
