Yeah it can't be 100% secure or anywhere near it and i bet the Mac is not 100% secure but something can be done to make it more secure.

It's actually quite easy to make Windows secure: Just don't connect to the Internet. Should be safe for weeks...

    :D

Seriously though: It's not too hard, get a good firewall (Windows own or a 3rd party) and anti-virus program (I recommend Norman for both), install Ad-Aware plus Microsofts own anti-spyware (and update all daily), stay away from unknown email attachment, shady sites and filesharing (basically follow the ancient advice to kids about not taking candy from or talking to strangers) and you shouldn't have any problems.

I'd recommend Pro-Networks.org. They've got some good people for Windows and Linux support. They've got a few Mac users too.

the first step towards securing your pc is to make absolutely sure that browser is *not* internet explorer

No matter what computer you have: Physical access == Root. Step #1 is to completely secure the room that your computer is in :)

www.firefox.com for starters, use that as your main browser.

Then download adaware, spybot search and destroy, cleanup and zonealarm. You'll find all those by doing a google search for the name of the program.

Zonealarm is a good free firewall
adaware and spybot sNd are spyware removers
cleanup is just a good program that cleans up crap on the computer that you don't need.

People that complain endlessly that windows can't be kept safe, just don't know about all the little things to help it stay that way. Now I will agree with the whole why should they have to do all these things to keep a computer from getting spyware and blah blah, but hey, that's the world today sadly.
