Microsoft's Windows Media Player app is no longer supported. You should instead get the Flip4Mac Windows Media component for QuickTime, which plays WMV streaming media quite well. It's available at http://www.flip4mac.com/

Flip4Mac will keep upgrading it's self so Mac users are not left behind. AVIs that play on a Windows machine may still not work with Flip4Mac, WMP for OSX, or QT (which uses the F4M plug in). Many AVI codecs will not be translated, because the 3rd party creators of the codecs don't (or wont) support OS X. Just a head’s up on that.

There really aren't that many codecs in use out there. It's pretty much QT codecs like Sorenson or H.264 (in QuickTime files, which obviously QT will play), WMV (which Flip4Mac can play almost all of, except DRM-protected files), RM (which you have to have RealPlayer for), or DivX/XviD-encoded AVIs (which can be played by installing the DivX QuickTime component, which is freely available). There's even an AC-3 component for QuickTime for files that have AC-3 surround sound.

Anything more obscure (like OGM or MKV) and you're into the territory covered by VLC and/or mplayer.

There are precious few video files that just CAN'T be played on OS X at all. To claim there are is just spreading FUD.

I backup the Flip4Mac option, it just keeps getting better and better, and I find it is usable finally. Although it is not going to make MySpace pages work any better.
