I was wondering, if you bought a G5 and a Windows XP cd, could you reformat the hard drive and put windows XP on it? I know it would be against the laws of nature and a travisty to the apple name, but I was wondering if it was even possible.

the developers kit for xbox2 is running on a G5 with a modified NT kernel

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=14407

btw it isn't against the to put any operating system on your computer, it is a matter of architectures. XP is base on the NT kernel which is made specifically for the Intel processors. Early verison of the NT kernel did run on MIPS though. Anyways OS X is made for the PowerPC architecture was is totally different system therefore making not compatible with it.

Unless the licensing agreement forbids it. Putting OS X on anything but a Mac (even if it were possible) is expressly forbidden in the licensing agreement.

Well, since windows XP is an x86 os, and OS X is powerPC, not by a longshot. If you are interested in running XP, either wait till October when MS supposedly will release the new version of virtual pc that is compatible with the g5. You can also try qemu here: http://www.freeoszoo.org/download.php
but don't expect any miracles.. You will probably need to re-partition your drive if you want to install xp on it(though you don't have to if you install any of the linux varaties they have on the site, now if only they would mirror them....been trying to download them for 3 days either I or they get a connection issue and I have to re-start because their ftp site doesn't support resuming...)

Yeah, I'm aware of Pear PC and how "well" it works. It's a proof of concept and that's about it. I intentionally didn't mention it.

He was talking about putting Windows XP on a Mac, which can be done, but not how you wanted to do it. See you can't actually 'reformat and install' winxp, you have to run Windows inside of Mac OS. There is a program called VirtualPC which lets you do this, but you will need a very speedy mac to run xp very well.

Well he has a G5, so speed woudn't be a problem (though you need lots of RAM too for Win2000 and XP), but Virtual PC isn't out for G5s yet. That's why someone suggested Qemu but that's a bit slower than VPC, though I'm not sure by how much.

im sure the developer wants it to be more than a proof of concept
unfortunately, dont expect pearpc releases anytime soon, one of the developers was killed a month ago.
pearpc is pretty good, imho. gave up on it because of the amount of time it took, but if its a ppc emulator, maybe i'll try installing gentoo ppc on it one day :)

Nermal - I'm not understanding what youre trying to say :p dont you mean that youre talking about pearpc, not MOL? MOL requires linux running on ppc, which i believe still falls under apple's license agreement, because it runs on their own hardware. MOL is not an emulator. PearPC is.

timelessblur - well youre breaking apple's license agreement, and youre pirating software at the same time :\ wtg.

umm new builds have been and still are being released almost daily. That was the guy was just one of the people working on it.

And yeah it was more or less something just something to see if it can been done. It is a cheap aretentive for PC people like me to look at OSX and to see what it has to offer. more look at the some of the programs and see what they can do and what they have to protenctionaly offer speed wise it is very very slow and choppy but it is still something fun to play around with

i meant big releases, not cvs nightlies or whatever.
and urm there were two main developers, now one. "just one of the people" actually means a lot.

so does that mean that i can pirate a copy of windows xp and virtualpc to see what windows is like? Urrrrrr...pfff. it doesnt make it right. you're better off driving to your local apple specialist/reseller/store/user group/user to see what its like. Or vnc, ssh, whatever.
Yeah i think i will follow your logic, and run vpc to use XP, to see if its worth switching for all the games.

there was once a version of Windows NT 4.0 for PPC...

in depth information 'bout that can be found here...

more here on MS NT 4.0 site...

here you'll find info 'bout the reason why the PPC version was discontinued...

maybe there will be a version of "Shorthorn" or whatever wack Microsoft OS for PPC someday in a gazillion years... who knows?!

Umm appently you missed the point. Considering I can not afford nor would I waste my money buying a computer just to see what the mac OS is like. All it does is give me a taste of what it like and lets see driving to the local store does not show me jack in what it can do I am sorry but I would rather play with it on my terms and more indepted than the ones at the store which are very limited and dont have internet. And lets see all it does is show me what it may do. it slow as hell yes so it not a the best redention of what it can do but it shows me protenction of easy of use/non easy of use. Using VPC is like using Pear it gives you an idea what the power is but not the true power. When I find something intersting I go look on a real mac on what it really like beside I learned from using it that even so call maccy know jack about the power of there OS and find it surpising when I point something out that they can do that they did not know about.
